Stephen F. Austin State University is located in beautiful Nacogdoches – the oldest town in Texas – with a population of approximately 35,000 in the tall pine tree forests of the eastern part of the state. The city is located 140 miles north of Houston and 160 miles southeast of Dallas. The demographics of the city are 51% white, 26% black, and 19% Hispanic.

The Department of Mass Communication’s undergraduate degree is among the “Top 10 Undergraduate Majors” on campus while the master’s degree is ranked 10th campus-wide in headcount. At the undergraduate level, students can choose a concentration of 1) social media, 2) broadcast journalism, or 3) advertising and public relations.

The candidate will teach undergraduate classes predominantly in broadcast journalism both face-to-face and online. They may also teach in the online graduate program. An ideal candidate will haveconceptual and professional expertise in the following areas: media writing, audio/visual production, radio/audio, podcasting, multimedia journalism, media law and ethics, and broadcast news reporting. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is preferred. Candidate may be asked to assist with the campus radio station and mentor professional student organizations.

The preferred candidate would hold a Ph.D. in communication or related discipline; ABDs will be considered, but the candidate must be able to demonstrate that the degree will be completed within the first academic year of employment. Candidates with master’s degrees and substantial professional experience will be considered. The successful candidate must possess a commitment to maintaining an active scholarly agenda and participate in advising, recruitment, service and committee work at the department and university level.

The social media concentration is a fully online curriculum consisting of seven courses: Introduction to Social Media, Social Media Strategies, Social Media Case Studies, Social Media Content Production, Advertising and Promotion for Social Media, Future Technology, and Research in Social Media. Although the courses are online, the position is not remote.



The ability to teach social media analytics would be highly coveted, but not required. Teaching and research interests desired include analytics, content creation, copy writing for social media, branding, and social media research. The successful candidate would be a member of the graduate faculty and be expected to teach courses in the unit’s online master's degree and maintain an active research agenda.



The preferred candidate would hold a Ph.D. in communication or related discipline; ABDs will be considered, but the candidate must be able to demonstrate that the degree will be completed within the first year of employment. Professional experience in the media industry is a plus. The successful candidate must possess a commitment to participate in advising, retention, recruitment, service and committee work at the department and university level.
