*Statement on the book’s goals and methods*

**

The aim of this edited volume is to explore, analyze and to shed light to the field, practice, research and critical inquiry of media, journalism and mass communications in four countries in Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan).

This book can fill the gap in the shortage of text/handbooks in journalism, media and communication programs primarily in Central Asian higher education institutions but also international institutions that have an interdisciplinary approach to Central Asian Studies or post-soviet communication and media practices. The scarcity of research and scholarly articles on the complex and increasingly changing media, journalism and mass/digital communication in Central Asia could be overcome with this anthology as it will serve as the fundamental literature for both researchers and academicians in and of Central Asia.

This handbook pays close attention to local media and communication in four Central Asian countries as an object of study. Besides offering a comparative perspective on the trajectories of local media and communication development in different countries, it provides a more nuanced understanding of the actual functions of such media in a country’s media system and for local communities. The proposed book will combine case studies with a more analytical discussion of the actual state of affairs in the local media and communication of four Central Asian countries using a variety of materials and methods.

The themes these chapters will be grouped around focus on social change, development and media freedom, civil society and media, national identity construction, ethnicity and media, media and religion, media ownership, media and elections, gender and media, migration and media, journalism curriculum, community media, public communications, media law and ethics, environmental journalism, emergency and crisis communication, community building and participation, media literacy, social networking sites, intercultural communication, tribalism and media, language and media, media and politics, foreign reporting, country branding, media and violence, cultural memes and identity.

The editors of this volume aim to include new and emerging researchers from this region by inviting them to author chapters based on their recently completed master’s and PhD dissertations. This approach is taken to ensure the latest research in this field of studies is included in this volume that is often not published in a collection of work that contextualizes the issues explored. By bringing together new and emerging researchers with established authors the editors also hope to provide a supportive dialogue between different points of view.

With this book we hope to contribute to overcome the dearth of works on Central Asia for both scholarly knowledge and undergraduate and graduate student education in journalism, media and communications. Contributors are expected to use both qualitative and quantitative research methods from various disciplinary fields (ethnography/anthropology, sociology, media/communication, education, politics etc.).

The chapters will be presented thematically focusing on issues and practices. Submissions will be assessed on their relevance to the themes identified for this volume, originality of research and presentation. After receipt of formatted papers and an introduction, the process would require peer review of the full publication, followed by revision.

Please send your book chapter titles and abstracts (450-500 words) by 20 January, 2020 to editors’ email addresses.
