[Commlist] Call for Nominations for SCMS Central, East and South European Cinema and Media Studies SIG Group Chair(s)

Mon May 13 11:56:43 GMT 2019

*Call for Nominations for SCMS Central, East and South European Cinema and Media Studies SIG Group Chair(s)*

As chairs of the Central / East / South European Cinemas Scholarly Interest Group at the Society of Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), we are seeking nominees and expressions of interest to fulfil the role of the Group’s Chairs for the upcoming three-year term (2019-2022).

*The Central/East/South European Cinemas Scholarly Interest Group*was formed in 2005 during the SCMS annual conference in London. The group serves as a forum for scholars researching and theorizing cinema and media from the historically marginalized and traditionally understudied regions of "the other Europe”: Central Europe, the "former East Block,” the South-Eastern Europe, and Turkey. Given that the collapse of communism in Europe, and the subsequent unification of Europe, has left film and media scholars of the regions without definitive geopolitical, national, and ideological frameworks to position their scholarship, our aim is to discover new models and modes for researching and theorizing film and media from these regions. The SIG provides fellowship, support and advocacy for the group members, while finding ways in which the scholarship of the region can create essential dialogue with larger debates within global film, television, and media studies. Aside from maintaining an active social media presence on Facebook, in which publications, calls-for-papers, and other initiatives to preserve film heritage are circulated and discussed, the SIG Group runs the annual Award for the Outstanding Published Essay in the Field of Central/East/South European Cinema and Media Studies, in order to promote scholarly activities in our area as well as allow fellow scholars to get a view of the best of the field at the moment.

_Chair responsibilities include but are not limited to:_

  * Represent concerns of the group at business meeting with the Board
    of Directors
  * Collect and maintain resources for the members on the SIG group’s
Facebook page and SCMS website and keep the members informed of the
ongoing research, publications, and events related to group’s field
    of study.
  * Sponsor panels, screenings, events, and organise special sessions at
    annual SCMS conferences.
  * Coordinate and run the annual Award for the Outstanding Published
Essay in the Field of Central/East/South European Cinema and Media
    Studies.
  * Coordinate mentorship and networking opportunities.
  * Identify ongoing research and overlapping concerns with other SIGs
    and caucuses.
  * Bring together established and emerging scholars to establish a
sense of community and mentorship within The Central/East/South
    European Cinemas SIG.

The potential nominees should either be members of SCMS or be willing to become members.

The elections will be held via the SIG Group’s SCMS page in June and announced on 1 July 2019.

Any enquiries and expressions of interest should be directed via email to current co-chairs, Dr Evan Torner ((evan.torner /at/ uc.edu) <mailto:(evan.torner /at/ uc.edu)>) and Dr Ana Grgic ((ana.grgic /at/ monash.edu) <mailto:(ana.grgic /at/ monash.edu)>) by 31 May 2019.
