Com­mu­nic­a­tion Rights in the Digital Age

International Conference organized by the Helsinki Media Policy Research 
Group, the University of Helsinki, the ECREA Communication Law and 
Policy Section and the Euromedia Research Group, and supported by the 
IAMCR Communication Policy & Technology Section.

24–25 October 2019, Helsinki, Finland

Conference presenters will be invited to submit to a special issue of 
the Journal of Information Policy, (www.jip-online.org 
<http://www.jip-online.org/>).

Abstract submission deadline: 15 May 2019.


The rights-based perspective on ethical and political questions 
presented by the new digital media has recently regained attention in 
academic and political debates. Due to the importance of communication 
rights to societies and democracy, it is imperative to understand how 
those rights are defined, manifested, regulated, and monitored today. 
The realization of communication rights is further shaped by economic, 
political and socio-cultural situations. What do we know about these 
contexts? How can we accumulate a better conceptual and empirical 
understanding of communication rights? This conference will address the 
interplay of national and global, universal and specific, 
characteristics of communication rights.

We are interested in analyses of different definitions of communication 
rights; of policy and other actors defining these rights in national and 
international contexts; and of current core issues or cases that pertain 
to communication rights. We welcome conceptual and theoretical 
interventions as well as empirical approaches.

Presenters at the conference will be invited to submit their completed 
papers for review by the Journal of Information Policy 
(www.jip-online.org <http://www.jip-online.org/>). Now in its 9th year, 
the JIP brings contemporary scholarly research and analysis of 
significant information policy issues to the attention of policymakers 
in a timely fashion via an online format. The JIP is a publication of 
the Institute for Information Policy at the Pennsylvania State 
University. The JIP is an open-access journal accessible on the JSTOR 
platform. Published works in the JIP are licensed under Creative Commons 
Attribution, which means that all content is freely available 
immediately upon publication without charge to the user or his/her 
institution.
