Job description
A position as researcher (SKO 1108 without a Phd; SKO 1109 with a PhD),
connected to the ongoing research project on Barn og Internett – Risiko
og Rettigheter,/EU Kids Online is available at the Department of Media
and Communication, University of Oslo. The project is funded by the
Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
We are looking for a candidate with an excellent research record and
academic ambitions who can thrive in an interdisciplinary, international
research project. Methodological proficiency is necessary.
More about the position
The successful candidate will mainly analyze collected data (national
and international), conduct supplementary research and data collection,
and contribute to academic publications and public reports in
cooperation with other researchers connected to the project.
The candidate will aid the production of thematic packages of knowledge
aimed at Norwegian authorities and field players working with issues
related to children/youth, internet, risks and children’s rights. In
addition, other research related activities, including public
dissemination, can be expected.
The candidate will also, together with the project´s team members draw
conclusive and research-grounded findings from the collected data and
provide insight and recommendations for the establishment of a cross
sectorial network with players in the field of children/youth and
internet. The candidate will be able to leverage their research
experience towards writing other funding applications for long-term
projects in the field of children, youth and digital media.
The candidate will be part of the EU Kids Online research group at the
department. This area of media studies include research on children and
youth´s digital behavior and online skills, their rights and awareness
of these rights, the opportunities and risks related to digital
activities and the role and competence of parents, teachers and adult
persons providing guidance to children and youth. A corner stone of the
project is also to give recommendations to authorities and field players
on safe Internet use and to convert research data and analyses into
policy documents and guidelines, which moves the field ahead.
The appointment is for a period of commencement as soon as possible
until 31st May 2021 (project period ends).
Qualification requirements
PhD or Master’s degree within Media Studies or a related area, with
experience in quantitative analysis (SPSS) and qualitative interviews.
Candidates with experience within the area of children/youth and digital
skills might be prioritized
Personal suitability and motivation for the position
Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
When evaluating the applications, emphasis will be placed on:
The applicant’s experience with research on children/youth and
digital skills/new media and interest in the EU Kids Online project
The applicant’s experience with the methods and theories related to
children/youth/internet and the use of survey data in relation to this
target group
The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry
out the tasks within the allotted time frame and contribute to the main
research area
The applicant's co-operative and communication skills, ability to
successfully work in a team and join in academic collaboration
Ability to perform necessary analyses for policy reports together
with an ability to produce creative scholarly work
Experience with working on research projects and funding
applications is a plus
We offer
Salary NOK 442 400 – 497 000 per annum (without a PhD); salary NOK
497 000 – 576 100 per annum (with a PhD) depending on qualifications
