*Mediating ‘China’:*

*Postgraduate Symposium of Visual Representations of the People, Traditions, and Spaces of Chinese-speaking Communities*

*Saturday, **4 May 2019*

*Avenue Campus (Lecture Theatre B), University of Southampton (UK)***

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The Centre for International Film Research (CIFR), run by the Film department at the University of Southampton, cordially invites postgraduate students to submit paper abstracts for our forthcoming postgraduate symposium, entitled ‘Mediating China’, on the visual representation of the people, traditions and spaces of Chinese-speaking communities in film, TV and new media. The symposium will take placeat the Avenue Campus, the University of Southampton, on *4 May 2019*. This symposium will coincide with the 100^th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement that was instrumental in changing the trajectory of the development of Chinese culture in the past century.

This symposium will explore how the spaces, identity, language, people and traditions of various Chinese-speaking communities have been visualised and represented in a variety of visual media. From cinema and video games to television and other art forms, this symposium will offer an excellent platform to promote comprehensive and interdisciplinary insight not only into the Chinese visual culture itself, but also the eclectic range of innovative research methods and critical approaches employed to study and analyse such culture, along with their development and integration with the world amidst globalisation and current affairs/international relations.This is an excellent opportunity for those of you who would like to discuss your latest research with some of the leading figures in the fields of film and media studies. Several renowned scholars have kindly agreed to be our panel discussants. It will also give postgraduate students an opportunity to do networking and to stay abreast of the latest research trends in related disciplines.

*Abstract and paper submission:*

If you would like to present a paper at this symposium, please send us an *abstract of no more than 250 words* and a *short biography**of **no more than 100 words (*detailing your research interestsand PhD supervisors,your affiliation, and email address).

Abstracts can be submitted via email to: (_jj1g16 /at/ soton.ac).uk_

*Deadline for abstract submission: Thursday, 28^February 2019, 5pm (UK time).*

Selected presenters will be invited to submit a full paper (for a presentation of 20 minutes) before the symposium day. *Deadline for full paper submission: Monday, 22 April 2019, 5pm (UK time).*

Contributions may include, but are by no means limited to, the following areas:

・Chinese-language films, TV, new media, and related industries

・Media and visual culture in the Chinese context

・Representations of Chinese identity in film, TV, and new media

・Representations of time,space, and place in Chinese-language film, TV, and new media

・The aesthetics of Chinese of film, TV, and new media

・Chinese visual culture and globalisation

・Chinese visual culture and its integration with current affairs/international relations

・Chinese media traditions/practices/industries and their interaction with media traditions/practices of other countries/territories


NOTE: Presentation is in English only

This symposium is sponsored by the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton.

There will be NO registration fee. However, chosen presenters will have to arrange their own trip/accommodation. Lunch and refreshments will be provided by the organisers.
