*AHRC and ESRC postgraduate funding in Modern Languages at the
University of Liverpool*
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of
Liverpool is delighted to announce a range of studentships for Autumn
2019 entry.
*Specialisms in film studies and potential areas for supervision*: Latin
American and Lusophone cinemas; stars and stardom; film music; popular
genres*; *Latin American Film and TV; Violence and conflict on film;
star studies; celebrity studies; and Digital Culture including
user-generated content and amateur/professional interface; Post New Wave
French cinema
political cinema in France post-1968; the interaction of film and
theatre; the multilingual dimension of European cinema; contemporary and
post-war German literature and film; Italian crime film; Latin American
women film-makers; movement in Latin American cinema;
Cinematic realism; Contemporary world cinema; Spanish film and
television; feminism and Spanish media; documentary; memory in Spanish
film and television.
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures

academic staff working across a wide range of language-based studies
covering literature, new media, film, history, politics, culture,
sociolinguistics and Translation Studies. Alongside French, German,
Hispanic Studies, Italian, Latin American Studies and Chinese, the
department also offers Film Studies. The Department is an active
participant in the School’s inter-disciplinary research centres,
including the Centre for the Study of International Slavery

The AHRC North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership offers
funding for PhD (+3 or +2) through the Modern Languages and Translation
Pathway and the Language-Based Area Studies Pathway. More information is

The Language-Based Area Studies Pathway of the ESRC North West Social
Science Doctoral Training Partnership offers MRes + PhD (1+3 years) and
PhD (+3) studentships in Latin American Studies in Liverpool. More
