The Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London is inviting applications to our PhD programmes (MPhil/PhD in Media & Communications, MPhil/PhD in Cultural Studies).

Outstanding applicants who receive an offer of a place on a PhD programme will be invited to apply for an ESRC award (Home and EU students) through our membership of the South-east Network for Social Sciences <http://senss-dtp.ac.uk./about-senss> (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), funded by the ESRC <http://www.esrc.ac.uk/>. Fully-funded ESRC studentships are available to research students via this DTP. There are 37 studentships are available across the 10 SeNSS institutions for entry in October 2019.

*‌Home students*: studentships will cover your tuition fees for up to four years full-time (including for an MA or MSc if relevant) or the part-time equivalent and will provide an annual stipend. This is currently worth (as of 2018/19) £16,777 including London Weighting. Those studying on a part-time basis will be eligible for  £8,388 per year pro rata.**

*EU students* can apply for the 2019/20 year and, if successful, will receive a fees-only award.**

*Routes for research and training*

There are a variety of flexible routes for research and training, depending on your background and the research you’re planning to undertake.

*1+3 route: *If you don’t already have a Masters degree with an extensive methods component then you should consider applying for a 1+3 route, which offers 1 years funding to undertake an approved research Masters, followed by 3 years funding to undertake your PhD.

*+3 route: *If you already have a Masters degree with an extensive research component (eg a research Masters offered by an ESRC DTC) then you will need to apply for this route which offers 3 years funding to do your PhD.

Students with social science interests in *Media, Communication and Cultural Studies* may apply under the *Sociology Pathway*.

*Application Process. *Please complete the following steps:

  * Check your eligibility for the funding

<http://www.esrc.ac.uk/funding-and-guidance/postgraduates/prospective-students/eligibility/index.aspx>
  * Contact the department and a likely supervisor for your research
  * Apply for a PhD place at Goldsmiths

<https://www.gold.ac.uk/pg/apply/applying-for-a-postgraduate-research-degree/>, indicating
clearly that you want to be considered for ESRC funding. If you're
applying for one of the 1+3 awards you'll also need to apply for a
    Masters place.

As part of your application you’ll need to nominate two academic referees who will provide a reference on your suitability for a PhD programme. It is your responsibility to ensure that they provide the references by the deadline required.

To be considered for an ESRC SeNSS scholarship your application to Goldsmiths must be completed by *13th January 2019*.

We advise you to have contacted the department about your proposal well before this deadline.

*Selection process*

The academic department to which you’ve applied will consider your application and may invite you for an interview. If successful you will be offered a place on the relevant PhD research programme.

The department has a limited allocation of nominations that they can make to the relevant pathway for funding. If you are amongst the strongest candidates applying within the pathway at Goldsmiths, then you may be nominated to go forward to the next stage of the competition. If you are nominated to go forward to this stage, you will be advised and required to complete a separate studentship application. If nominated, your application will be considered at the SeNSS DTP studentship selection panels, who will then make their funding offers to the best of the nominated candidates.

For more information about the Media and Communications Pathway (within Sociology) please contact Dr Mirca Madianou ((m.madianou /at/ gold.ac.uk)) admissions convenor for PhD Media & Communications and PhD Cultural Studies.
