The Department of Film, Theatre & Television at the University of Reading is part of the South Wales and West Doctoral Training Partnership which offers funded PhD scholarships to UK and EU students across a consortium of nine universities. We welcome proposals related to the themes outlined by the DTP: - Cultural Transmission, Translation and Migration
    - Visual and Textual Aesthetics and Materialities
    - Environmental and Regional Pasts and Futures
    - Politics, Policies and Values
    - STEMM Subjects and Objects
    - Conflict and Post-Conflict

The Department of Film, Theatre & Television at Reading offers specialist supervision in the areas of film, theatre and television and supports a variety of interdisciplinary and practice-based doctoral projects. Our Minghella Studios feature a digital cinema, two theatres and an experimental performance space, a digital sound stage/multi-camera television studio, editing rooms, audio post-production spaces and a sound studio and we work with a range of local and national theatre companies and arts organisations. The University hosts several important archives, including those of Samuel Beckett and Stephen Dwoskin. The department is currently engaged in three major funded research projects, on Intermediality and the history of Brazilian Cinema, the histories and legacies of Harold Pinter, and the legacies of Stephen Dwoskin. Our research focuses particularly on stage and screen performance and production in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Academic staff specialise in the following areas:

Film: The analysis and histories of cinema, including work on mise-en-scène, alternative cinema and artists’ film, new digital and 3D forms, US film culture and film style, realism and world cinema, cinema and intermediality, landscape in film and ecocriticism. Theatre: Beckett’s drama for stage and screen, twentieth and twenty-first-century British, Irish and European theatre and performance, performance analysis, gender and performance, theatre companies, directors and working practices, diasporic performance, political theatre and multimedia and interdisciplinary practice-as-research allied to written scholarship. Television: British and US TV drama and documentary, contemporary television, popular and youth television and new media, transnational television and film.
