We are looking to recruit a Research Associate (0.5 for two years) to work on the AHRC-funded project /Screen Agencies as Cultural Intermediaries within the Film and Television Sector. /The project began this month and the research post begins in October 2018 or soon thereafter. The project is a collaboration between Dr Caitriona Noonan (Cardiff University) and Professor Ruth McElroy (University of South Wales), and examines the role of screen agencies in the provision of film and television within small European nations. The post-holder will contribute to the intellectual and logistical development of the project, including engaging policy-makers and industry with the findings of the research. Applicants should have a relevant PhD and/or appropriate industry experience (e.g. working in cultural funding or policy). Research Associate

To conduct research and provide administrative support to the AHRC-funded project Screen Agencies as Cultural Intermediaries: Negotiating and Shaping Cultural Policy for the Film and TV Industries within Selected Small Nations.

The Screen Agencies as Cultural Intermediaries is the first large-scale comparative study of screen agencies and associated policy-making, extending across several small European nations. It assesses the impact of various policy interventions on the film and television industries and grows out of previous research of these nations and their creative sectors.

The post holder will report directly to the PI and will support the PI and CI by reviewing the academic and policy literature around support for the screen sector, mapping the film and television sector of specific small nations, conducting interviews with stakeholders where appropriate, publishing work in high-quality journals, and assisting with dissemination and impact activities including conferences and other public outputs.

The post is fixed term for 20 months and part-time at 17.5 hours per week.

Salary: £32,548 - £38,833 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 6)

Job Description

Research

• To conduct quantitative and qualitative research on film and television policy within small nations, and on the various organisations that contribute to that landscape. • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including project planning, reporting and dissemination. • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals • To review and synthesise existing literature within the field, including academic research and policy documents. • To publish in high quality peer-reviewed national and international journals • To present research at national and international conferences/seminars as appropriate • To create and nurture relevant research networks to include academics, industry and policy makers in order to pursue opportunities for collaboration and dissemination. • To prepare progress reports and other updates to the advisory board and other key stakeholders
• To participate in School research activities

• To contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional, national and international profile • To undergo professional development that is appropriate to the post and which will enhance the post holders’ research and project management skills. • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role of research assistant.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2. An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within at least one of following research fields:
 Policy support for the creative sector
 Media in and from small nations
 Film and/or television industry
3. Proven ability to generate academic outputs, industry reports or policy briefings. 4. Proven ability to conduct qualitative research and data analysis, including interviews.
5. Evidence of project administration

Communication and Team Working

6. Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication, particularly with industry and policy-makers 7. Proven ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation particularly in the dissemination of research. 8. Proven ability to work independently and supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals as part of a small research team.

Desirable Criteria

1. Evidence of innovative collaboration with industry and/or policy-makers
2. Experience of working within public-sector policy -making or the film and television industry.
3. Experience of quantitative mapping and economic analysis
4. Proven ability to be successful in competitive research funding
5. Competencies in a European language.
