We are inviting applications for doctoral research training
opportunities with an AHRC‐funded project in Liverpool, Brews and Brows:
Gathering Stories through Research as Practice as Novel Interface
Between the Humanities and the Sciences. Successful applicants will be
provided with expert training in research as practice, qualitative
research, equipment handling and media communication.
About the project: Brews and Brows is a project that gathers stories
about the cultural importance of the eyebrow and the Scousebrow to
Liverpool. We will provide training for five doctoral students in a
variety of information gathering methods using a variety of tools. In a
project that places a focus on research as practice, those selected will
gain a mix of specialist technical (A/V documentation, equipment
support) and transferrable skills (media communication, working with
human subjects, focus groups). Those selected will assist in the
storytelling event at FACT media arts centre (https://www.fact.co.uk/)
from the 25th‐28th April 2018 and a follow up event with fellow students
in October 2018. It is an ideal opportunity to acquire new skills,
understand research as practice, and work collaboratively across
disciplines.
We will provide training in the making of documentary film; as well as
the use of the face scanning equipment; support in the gathering of
qualitative data; and a hands‐on introduction to digital humanities
research skills through the management and maintenance of a social media
feed related to a research event. This is a great opportunity to learn
about research and public engagement first‐hand supported by specialists
in several fields.
Eligibility criteria: Open to Humanities and Social Science
postgraduates with priority given to AHRC‐funded students. Must be
available for the following dates: 23rd‐29th April 2018.
Desirable criteria: Training will be provided. However, preference will
be given to those with one or more of the following: qualitative
research experience, experience working with participants, and/or
practice based research including filmmaking.
How to apply: Applications should include name, institution, contact
details, brief and concise summary of research including methodological
approach (no more than 300 words), and CV (no more than 1 page) to Dr
Niamh Thornton ((n.thornton /at/ liverpool.ac.uk)). Deadline for submission is
1st March 2018. Interview date 8th March and notification of outcome 9th
March 2018.
Additional information: Travel and subsistence expenses will be
provided. Working in partnership with FACT and Local SMEs including hair
and beauty salons, this is a public engagement and research impact
event. As a strategic partner FACT will facilitate the event. Successful
applicants will be trained to provide assistance in the management and
promotion of the event and will be given key insights in the reporting
of the findings and process in the follow up research event. This is a
major opportunity, we invite all interested parties to apply.
