Critical Media Literacy

The Centre for Critical Media Literacy aims to facilitate a range of 
media research, production, learning and community engagement, with a 
commitment to equality and diversity, and to an understanding of media 
literacy in wider social, economic and political contexts. Its mission 
includes scientifically informed and timely studies of the changing 
technologies that are used in media production, distribution and 
consumption.

PhD Scholarship Opportunity: The centre is pleased to be able to offer a 
scholarship for a four-year PhD working on a community-based 
media-literacy project. It would be of particular interest to someone 
with a background in journalism and strong knowledge of social media. 
The project, which has been approved for funding under the College of 
Arts and Tourism scholarship scheme in DIT, will use The Liberty, a 
‘hyperlocal’ newspaper and website produced by students at Dublin 
Institute of Technology for a mainly working-class community in Dublin's 
inner city, to innovate in the area of journalistic transparency. The 
project will employ social media as a forum for sharing 'the story 
behind the story', with tweets, Facebook updates, YouTube videos and 
Instagram posts that unveil aspects of the production of journalism, 
from notebook pages to editing history, from who-was-interviewed to 
who-refused. A doctoral-level researcher will be responsible for 
implementation, monitoring, community engagement and evaluation of this 
project. Once implemented, the project would help readers to understand 
better the process of news construction, and help 
journalists-in-training to become accustomed to radical ideas of public 
openness about that process.

The successful candidate will of course be in a position to shape the 
direction of this research. She or he will receive payment of €16,000 
per annum, plus up to €2,000 in additional expenses, with all DIT fees
