ECREA Pre-Conference: Information Diversity and Media Pluralism in the
Age of Algorithms
The concept of information diversity has gained attention in the
aftermath of the Brexit referendum and the 2016 US presidential election
as social divides manifested themselves. This discussion renewed the
interest in pluralism and diversity in the media as a crucial part of
democracy. Algorithmic news selection (“filter bubbles”) and social
media “echo chamber” challenge the idea of free access to a broad range
of opinions and topics. Against this background, the question arises how
sufficient information plurality for citizens can be ensured in order to
enable informed political participation.
The aim of this preconference is to bring together researchers
interested in new perspectives on information diversity and media
pluralism. Submissions may investigate following questions:
− What is diversity beyond political ideology?
− How much diversity is needed for a functioning democracy?
− How can diversity and pluralism be measured?
− How can we insure sufficient pluralism in the current
media landscape?
− How does information diversity und media pluralism differ
across countries?
We are interested in submissions covering one or several of the above
questions. Submissions may investigate information diversity and media
pluralism from all relevant perspectives (citizens, political actors,
journalists, and other groups; media regulation, media production, media
content, media use and reception, and effects), both on a theoretical
and empirical level; internationally comparative studies are
appreciated. We encourage submissions with a broad variety of approaches
and from diverse perspectives, such as political communication,
communication policy and law, media use, journalism, or another relevant
background and from all parts of the world. Scholars at all stages of
their careers are welcome to apply.
