*CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: **“CREATIVE CULTURES FOR MEDIA PROGRESSION: AN UNCONFERENCE”* *Preconference, the Annual Conference of the European Media Management Association *
*Warsaw, June 13, 2018*

*Why organise an ‘Unconference’?*

Media firms are having to adapt to a fully digital, multi-platform, interactive, responsive media landscape. For media managers this means leading change programmes that may involve redundancies, union negotiations, and the re-skilling of the workforce. This is difficult territory to negotiate. As scholars of media management we argue that we should not exempt ourselves from this same adaptation challenge. We therefore propose an ‘unconference’, an opportunity to explore a new method of exchanging knowledge, drawing in constituents we may not have engaged with before, using participatory peer to peer methods.

*The Theme of the Day*

Creative industry firms are clustering with other specialists for a variety of reasons. For example, organisations who are beginning to explore the use of ‘Big Data’, artificial intelligence or the Internet of Things now need to work with computer scientists and data analysts. This can be intimidating, however, if it works it can result in greater resilience and an improved ability to adapt to external market conditions and/or disruptive technologies.

*What will I experience?*

An unconference offers the opportunity to exchange knowledge and present ideas in a series of tried and tested interactive formats. The theme of the day is to critically examine what builds and sustains a collaborative and innovative culture conducive to change and adaptation? We are inviting scholars, media managers and the Warsaw high technology start-up community to attend. You can be an informal observer, lead a session, or present your work in a Pecha Kucha (20 slides and 20 seconds each slide). The event will take place in a relaxed co-working space of Warsaw with food and drink provided. The venue will be revealed in January 2018 and the event will be free of charge.

*Why should I come?*

A World Café, a Fishbowl and a selection of individual Pecha Kucha presentations from leading scholars working in the field of media management will be augmented by a demonstration of the “MediaRoad” project (http://www.mediaroad.eu). This Horizon2020 funded initiative led by the European Broadcasting Union promises to help Europe’s media sector update the way it approaches innovation by strengthening collaboration between broadcasters and start-ups (Sandbox Hub) and by developing a network spanning across the creative sector to shape future research and innovation priorities. Findings will also be distributed from a three-year research project “Organisational Culture of Public Service Media: People, Values and Processes” (2015-2018) (www.creativemediaclusters.com <http://www.creativemediaclusters.com>). This international study conducted by Michal Glowacki (University of Warsaw) and Lizzie Jackson (London South Bank University) examines successful strategies and challenges relating to the organisational culture of ten high technology clusters in North American and Europe. A ‘Pitching Session’ from young Polish SMEs who are doing particularly innovative projects will close the proceedings. A DJ session and guided walk around the Praga district of Warsaw will end the day.

*How can I take part? *

There are three ways to take part in the unconference:

1. Turn up and just join in.

2. Lead a session (a World Café or a Fishbowl).

3. Submit an individual presentation for the Pecha Kucha.

*We are calling for session organisers to lead…*

An hour long**World Café**on progressive organisational cultures and structures that are likely to result in successful media and creative firms who are adapted to the digital, networked, media landscape. A World Café involves organising groups of people who discuss a topic at several tables. Individuals switch tables periodically and are introduced to the previous discussion at their new table by a ‘table host’. Formore on how to organise a World Café:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_café;.

An hour long**Fishbowl**on knowledge-exchange and production systems to facilitate sustainable//collaborative R&D and innovation.//A Fishbowl is a fast-paced debate that takes place between a large group. Turns to speak can be allotted by throwing a ball from speaker to speaker/. /For more on how to organise a Fishbowl: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishbowl_(conversation).

*… and for individual submissions* for the Pecha Kucha (20 slides lasting 20 seconds each).

Have you got something to say about the future workforce of media firms? Who will future creative media organisations be employing: data analyst, game designer, podcaster, YouTuber, VR/AR specialist, Online Community Manager? For a Pecha Kucha you will need to provide 20 slides and be prepared to talk for 20 seconds to each slide. For more on how to organise a *Pecha Kucha *presentation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PechaKucha).

*Submission and registration*

To propose a World Café or Fishbowl session we ask for a title and a 300 word description giving details of what attendees will gain and how they will be able to participate. Consider how you will open host and end the session, drawing together conclusions. To submit a Pecha Kucha we ask for a 300 word abstract giving us an overview of your presentation. Proposals should be submitted by February 28, 2018 to (michal.glowacki /at/ uw.edu.pl) <mailto:(michal.glowacki /at/ uw.edu.pl)> and (lizzie.jackson /at/ lsbu.ac.uk) <mailto:(lizzie.jackson /at/ lsbu.ac.uk)>. Notification of acceptance will be sent by March 10, 2018. To participate and enjoy the day … just register. Registration will open March 15, 2018 on www.creativemediaclusters.com/unconference <http://www.creativemediaclusters.com/unconference>.

*CALL FOR PAPERS/POSTERS (REMINDER)*
*The Annual Conference of the European Media Management Association: “Media Management in the Age of Big Data and High-tech”*
*Warsaw, June 14-15, 2018*

Big data, computer networks and machine-mediated communication are influencing how media are produced, marketed and consumed. The growing use of computer-assistance in the management of media products/services, media organisations, and the everyday life of audiences calls for critical examination by mediamanagement scholars and practitioners. Whether machines are framed as being dystopian or utopian, they are affecting the way we work and play. For Floridi (2014), the ‘Infosphere’ is reshaping human reality; for Tapscott and Tapscott (2016), the technology of Blockchain will produce an economic and value-exchange ledger that could become “the foundation of trust” (2016), and for Brynjolffson and Saunders (2010), the strategic value of technology to businesses is still increasing. We don’t yet know what is to come, but we do know that the media and associated creative industries are being challenged and disrupted.

Since 2015, Professor Stephen Hawking has been issuing warnings that machines will eventually become cleverer than their creators.  Many traditional media companies are struggling to adapt to the high technologies, the new amount of data and the new machine-related practices, both from cultural and organisational perspectives. Others, such as Google, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, see Artificial Intelligence simply as a means to offer new ways to access media services in the right place, at the right time, and on the right platform. The so-called Generation Z expects mediaportability and instant access, and grows up with augmented or virtual reality technologies and applications. The question is not whether to adapt to high technologies, big data and machine-related practices, but how?

2018 Annual Conference of the EuropeanMediaManagementAssociation (emma) in Warsaw, Poland, will seek to answer to the question of whether and how media enterprises are adapting to the age of machines. This may include the following sub-questions:

•       How to conceptualize media enterprises and mediamanagement in order to take advantage of ‘high technologies’? •       In what ways have computer networks changed the organisational structures and business economics of media firms? •       Can live streaming, podcasting, eSports, and media players offer a solution for legacy media? •       What are the cultural changes taking place in the ‘information age’, or the ‘age of high technologies and robots ‘? •       Will quality journalism be replaced by automated flows of data, filter bubbles, and fake news? •       Are participatory and spreadable media and prosumerism an opportunity or a threat to media managers and producers? •       How are power structures changing in the age of big data, high technology and machine-related practices? •       Is national and international media policy fit for the high technologies? •       What do we know about Generation Z and their media habits and why should we care?

In terms of topics, we welcome both paper proposals that address the specific conference theme as well as paper proposals that address more general issues with regard to the management of the media. Topics of relevance include (but are not limited to):

•       Machine intelligence and machine learning,
•       Big Data and Internet of Things,
• Media platforms and ICT,
•       Predictive analytics, behavioral targeting, data-driven personalisation,
•       IP management and data management planning,
• Media funding and venture capital,
•       Impact of digital technologies and machines on media consumption,
•       Cultural and production studies,
•       Smart city and social innovation,
•       Innovation management,
•       Organisational structures and cultures,
•       Strategic mediamanagement (emma Special Interest Group),
• Media entrepreneurship (emma Special Interest Group),
•       Information technology in media companies (emma Special Interest Group),
• Media policy & regulations (emma Special Interest Group),
•       Emerging media markets (emma Special Interest Group).

*Call for papers*

Submissions for the emma Conference are invited as paper proposals in the form of abstracts (500–750 words) followed by a full paper (6000 words maximum), if the abstract is accepted. The abstract should address the following evaluation criteria:

•       Relevance to the academic field of mediamanagement,
•       Theoretical background and rationale for selection,
•       Research methodology and description of empirical data used,
•       Clear summary of main results,
•       Originality and contribution to the field’s knowledge,
•       Practical implications (for business and/or policy).

All submissions will go through the process of double peer review by experts nominated to the
conference’s Scientific Committee. Paper submissions should be uploaded to emma’s online submission tool (http://www.media-management.eu/ocs/index.php/emma/emma2018/schedConf/cfp) by January 15, 2018. Full papers can only be considered for the Best Paper Award (€300), if they are submitted by April 30, 2018.

*Call for posters*

Similar to the Call for Papers, we welcome poster proposals that address the specific conference theme or other topics relevant for the field of mediamanagement. Different from the papers (that participants will present orally), the posters introduce on-going and future research projects. The focus is less on the results of such projects rather than the research question(s) and methodology. Ideally, participants look for cooperation partners through such posters. The posters will be exhibited at a prominent place at the conference venue throughout the conference. Whoever is interested in presenting a poster, should submit an abstract (500–750 words) which addresses the following evaluation criteria:

•       Goals of the ongoing or intended research project,
•       Research questions and hypotheses,
•       Research methodology and description of empirical data used,
•       Description of project team and collaboration partners,
•       Intention: why do I want to present my project at the emma conference? •       Expected outcomes: What do I want to gain from this presentation at the emma conference? •       Possibly assign the project to an emma Special Interest Group (where applicable).

Poster submissions should be made by January 15, 2018 via online form (https://www.media-management.eu/conference-warsaw/call-for-posters/). Upon acceptance of the poster proposal, participants will receive clear guidance in terms of the posters (size, format etc.).
