CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL ISSUE ON COMMUNICATION, POWER AND SOCIAL CHANGE
Manuscript Submissions Due: October 15, 2017
Publication Date: January 1, 2018
This monographic issue seeks to collect contributions that allow
observing, explaining, and reflecting about the transformations that
political communication is experiencing in the digital environment.
These changes are disrupting the scenario, the actors and the balance of
power between them. The new digital media, usually considered as
messianic technologies, are opening the debate between the public or
citizens empowerment, and idea that rises as a new totem in the
framework of utopian or dystopian approaches, depending on who
articulates them. This presents the redefinition of the power flows and
opens a new possibility for the social change and the transformation of
the democracy. Digital platforms, such as social media or app, and their
communicative potential are generating debates about the new modalities
of building the public agenda, about the ability to articulate new
discourses or about the power struggles between old and new political
actors, media actors, and social actors in this new environment, among
other aspects. All these questions require new knowledge to understand
this era of transit and its communicative and democratic consequences.
For this reason, this monographic issue wants to unite, from diverse
theoretical, empirical and methodological approaches, theoretical or
empirical contributions, including case studies, which contribute to
this aim.
Proposed lines of research:
• Theoretical perspective about democracy and communication in the
digital environment: between representation and participation.
• Theoretical perspectives on political communication: between targeted,
deliberative, participatory, and hybrid communication, and the paradigm
change.
• The social actors involved in the political communication and its
discourses: citizens’ empowerment.
• New relations form between political, media, and social actors in the
digital political communication environment.
• Changes in the communicative system and in the process of building
public opinion: new mechanisms for building the public agenda, the role
of the emotional in political communication, etc.
• Transformations introduced by social media in political communication
and democracy.
• The networked deliberative system.
• New connective social movements and their communicative strategies.
• Political and electoral mobilization and new media.
• Communication for social change in the digital environment.
