Responsibilities
We are seeking a full professor to expand our research and teaching programmes in communication science with specific expertise in the area of artificial intelligence, focusing on the communication between individuals and intelligent media technologies. You will be expected to boost ongoing projects at Radboud University, initiate new research and teaching lines, acquire external funding, and contribute to our Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in collaboration with other staff members. The professor will have a strong focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques for advancing the study of mediated communication and its uses and effects. Topics may include, but are not limited to: • recommender algorithms to personalise information presented through interactive media; • the emergence of artificial intelligence as agent in the news and information landscape, including digital, automated, and computational journalism; • the use of virtual and augmented reality to enable or enhance communication; • communication between human and virtual or tangible artificial agents (e.g. avatars, robots); • the use of analytics for web traffic, especially when these tools can be deployed and tuned by communication scholars; • the development of models of the spreading of information and influence through social network connections, (graph) analysis of peer networks; • the effectiveness of apps and wearables, and how sensors and software can be exploited with specific communication aims in mind. Communication Science at Radboud University is represented by a dynamic and multidisciplinary group of scholars, focusing on the production, content and, particularly, the reception of mediated communication. Research and teaching are characterized by a multidisciplinary focus (combining behavioural and sociocultural perspectives), multi-method approach, and a keen interest in developments in the media landscape. The professor will be expected to collaborate closely with the Artificial Intelligence group of the Faculty of Social Sciences in both research and teaching. The professor will be involved in the teaching programmes of Communication Science (Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes), the Research Master’s programmes in Behavioural Science and Social and Cultural Science, and the Behavioural Science Institute’s Graduate School. Research will be embedded in the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI), which has about 80 staff and over 100 PhD students. Its mission is to conduct top-level research on the fundamental principles and processes that govern human behaviour. The BSI Graduate School (officially recognized by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) is responsible for the training and supervision of PhD students. •	experience with supervising PhD projects;
•	competence in acquiring external research funding;
•	affinity and experience with knowledge dissemination and valorization;
• ability and willingness to contribute to administrative and organizational tasks; • an interdisciplinary attitude and strong orientation towards collaboration with other research groups and disciplines;
•	the qualities necessary to become a successful group leader;
•	an enthusiastic and enterprising personality.

What we have to offer
•	employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE;
• a maximum gross monthly salary of € 7,659 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale H2); • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus; • depending on experience, you will be granted tenure either immediately or upon a positive review after an initial temporary appointment; • you will be classified as a Full Professor 2 (hoogleraar 2) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO).
