CFP: New Horizons in the Ethnography of Communication Conference

June 6-8, 2017

Riverdale, New York

The Ethnography of Communication (EC) is thriving in its 6^th decade of research with practical applications to pressing social issues worldwide. Although there are a number of notable EC publications, the fall of 2017 will mark the 20^th anniversary of the initial development and publication of Donal Carbaugh’s “Cultural Discourse Theory.” This is one major theory within EC actively being used by EC scholars, practitioners, and students for research, teaching, and intervention worldwide.

This conference will bring together EC scholars, practitioners and students to forge new horizons in EC, Cultural Discourse Analysis (CuDA), and Speech Codes research, teaching and practice, while also honoring Carbaugh for his contributions to EC. The conference is open to all those interested in and working with EC, CuDA, Speech Codes, and their advancement.

The conference will have a variety of session types to maximize collaboration to advance EC including: individual papers, panels or roundtable discussions, working sessions, data sessions, research in progress, and pedagogical methods exchange (class assignments, activities or courses). We encourage creative and in-process work that functions to advance EC research, teaching, and practice. The conference is less about sharing completed EC studies and more about working collaboratively to advance various facets of EC and the Communication field.

Descriptions of and directions for submission for each session type follow. Participants may submit more than one proposal to maximize collaborative work at the conference. Every effort will be made to include as many participants as possible.

_Individual Paper_– Completed paper by single or multiple authors. Submit title of paper and maximum 500-word abstract of paper.

_Panel or Roundtable Discussion_– Panel or roundtable discussion on a topical, theoretical, methodological, or pedagogical theme with a chair and maximum of 5 panelists or discussants (chair may also be a panelist or discussant). Note whether panel or roundtable discussion; submit title and maximum 750-word abstract explaining purpose, rationale, and plan for panel or roundtable discussion. May include titles and short descriptions of each panelist’s presentation, but not required.

_Working Session_– Working session led by chair and up to 5 participants to collaborate to advance a particular area of EC. This may be a topical, theoretical, methodological, pedagogical, or applied area. Submit title of working session and maximum 500-word abstract explaining purpose, rationale, and plan for working session.

_Data Session_– Data session led by 1 to 3 people in which some data will be presented (e.g., digital recordings, transcripts), which the session leader(s) and audience members will collaboratively work to analyze. Submit title of data session and maximum 500-word abstract explaining data, purpose, rationale and plan for the session.

_Research in Progress_– EC research that has been formulated and in any state of progress to be presented and discussed with participants to advance the project. Submit title of research project and maximum 500-word abstract about research in progress and questions or problems researcher is working on.

_Class Activity, Assignment, or Course_– EC class activity, assignment, or course to be presented and discussed. Submit title and maximum 500-word abstract explaining activity, assignment, or course.

Submissions are due by *_January 3, 2017_* and should be emailed as Word attachments to: (newhorizonsinec /at/ gmail.com) <mailto:(newhorizonsinec /at/ gmail.com)>following the directions above for each session type. For each submission, include: (1) session type, and (2) author/panelist/discussant/participant name(s), affiliation(s), and position(s). Include chair or session leader name(s), affiliation(s), and position(s) when relevant.

Participants may make multiple submissions and take part in multiple sessions. _Conference Location & Details_: The conference will be held at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, a beautiful campus overlooking the Hudson River in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, 12 miles from midtown Manhattan. The conference has a room block at the Hampton Inn & Suites Yonkers with room rates of $159 per night (see our group web page for reservations http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/groups/personalized/N/NYCYNHX-ECC-20170606/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POGor call 914-377-1144 <tel:%28914-377-1144>and use group code “ECC”). Free roundtrip shuttle service will be provided from the hotel to the College. Dinner will be provided for the welcome reception on June 6 and lunch on June 7-8. Breakfast is included at the conference hotel. There are restaurants for dinner within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus for restaurants in a 5-mile radius; for restaurants in Manhattan, hotel guests can take a free shuttle bus to Yonkers or Greystone Train Station to Grand Central Station. For attendees who have other housing and those who are driving, free parking is available on campus. The closest airports are LaGuardia and JFK, respectively. The conference registration fee is TBD, but will likely range from $160-$200. A stipend may be available to reduce registration fees and travel for graduate and advanced undergraduate students (please mark your submission(s) as graduate or undergraduate student if you are interested in being considered for a potential stipend).

The conference is sponsored by the National Communication Association and the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
