& PhD study in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, 
Aberystwyth University _*

The Department of Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University 
is pleased to invite applications for PhD scholarships, through its 
involvement in the AHRC South West and Wales Doctoral Training 
Partnership (SWW DTP). The partnership brings together a Consortium of 8 
universities, extended by a network of prestigious international, 
national and regional organisations representing the arts, heritage, 
media and government sectors.

Our Department and the University have strong links with a range of 
these organisations, in particular: the National Library of Wales (based 
at Aberystwyth, and housing the Arts Council of Wales Archives, the 
Brith Gof archives, the National Sound and Screen Archive of Wales, and 
the ITV Wales Film and Video archive, among other important 
collections), and BBC Drama (Cardiff). We welcome applications related 
to any of our research specialisms (listed below). Scholarships are 
available to applicants living in the UK and the European Union, and 
projects will need to be supervised by relevant academic staff at two of 
the Universities in the consortium.

*_Information about the environment for doctoral study in the Department 
of Theatre, Film and Television Studies (TFTS) at Aberystwyth University:_*

The department has over thirty experienced, research-active PhD 
supervisors, able to supervise projects in both the English and Welsh 
Medium across theatre and drama, scenography, performance studies, media 
and communication, film and television, and spanning historical and 
archival work, textual analysis, audience and reception research, policy 
research and practice as research. We offer supervision and research 
training in both English and Welsh, with a focus on topics such as:

Contemporary European theatre; theatre and gender; physical theatre; 
disability and performance; site-specific performance; theatre, 
performance and architecture; performance and philosophy; performance 
and politics; cultural theory, drama and performance; performance 
historiography; archiving and documentation; history of performance art; 
performance and the heritage industry; contemporary English, Welsh and 
Irish drama; Welsh-language drama and performance;playwriting, 
performance writing and devised drama; intermediality in performance.

Avant-garde and experimental cinema; Landscape in Film and Performance; 
Film stardom and performance; Film audience and reception research (with 
specialisms in children as audiences, audience memory studies, and local 
cinemagoing studies); the role of sound and music in cinema; semiotics 
and advertising; press, cinema and broadcasting history and policy; 
content regulation of television, and film censorship (national and 
local); documentary film and television; British and American television 
drama; Horror and Cult Cinema; Russian Cinema and Theatre; Classical 
Hollywood Cinema; British cinema and television (including Welsh cinema 
and television).

Prospective applicants who are interested in applying – and eligible for 
funding – are strongly encouraged to register for the AHRC SWW DTP 
*Information Day* in Cardiff at the *National Museum of Wales* on *28th 
November 2016*. The aim of the Information Day is for you to learn more 
about the research opportunities and supervisory expertise offered in 
the Consortium (including at Aberystwyth University).  For further

for the Information Day closes on 13^th November 2016.

*Applications for both funding and PhD place*may be submitted via the 
AHRC SWW DTP website from 29th November 2016 until the final deadline of 
*12th January 2017*. Applicants will be required to submit an 
application form with a research proposal and personal statement. The 
awards will be made on the basis of academic merit, with no fixed quota 
assigned to any one institution or subject area within the DTP.
