*Summary*

The emergence and establishment of social networks is producing numerous changes in the field of political communication. The transformative potential of these technologies is driving new phenomena, such as the second screen, connective action, reverse agenda-setting, civic monitoring and the communicative empowerment of citizens. At the same time, it is leading to a growing hybridization between new and old media and rationales. In both cases, these platforms are contributing to shaping new settings for interactions between the public sphere and the political powers in our democracies.

This monographic issue of /Trípodos/ intends to analyze the role and the impact of social networks on political communication and on democracy. This issue intends to contribute to the current debate, which is generating growing attention among academics and researchers, about the changes that this field has undergone in the digital era, by presenting rigorous empirical studies and well-founded theoretical approaches. To this end, proposals that analyze, from a broad perspective, how the Web 2.0 and social networks are transforming the rationales, dynamics, actors, strategies and products that are tied to political communication are welcome. Along these lines, possible topics include the following:

1. The use of social networks in election campaigns.

2. The use of social networks by political journalists.

3. The use of social networks by social movements and political activists: strategies and communicative practices.

4. Transformations in political parties and social movements due to social networks.

5. The use of social networks as a second screen in political communication.

6. Interactivity and relationships among politicians, citizens and journalists on social networks.

7. The perception and assessment of Web 2.0 tools from the point of view of the actors involved in political communication.

8. Content production and political information on social networks.

9. New formats of political communication on social networks.

10. Political communication, participation and social networks: connective action, civilian monitoring of politics, etc.

11. The consumption of political information on social networks.

12. New ways of constructing the public agenda on social networks.

13. The impact of social networks on media coverage of politics.

*
Objectives*

In light of this situation, this monographic issue of /Trípodos/ holds three main objectives:

1. To contribute to expanding knowledge about the use and impact of social networks in political communication.

2. To identify the empirical characteristics and reach of the new phenomena generated in the field of political communication by the Web 2.0, such as the second screen, reverse agenda-setting, connective action, political monitoring and the communicative empowerment of citizens, among others.

3. To gain further understanding of the hybridization between new and old media and rationales, and of the consequences for both political communication and modern democracies.
