Department of Communication and Arts at Roskilde University (RU), Denmark, invites applications for 2 Assistant/Associate Professorships in Journalism to be filled by the 1st of January 2016 [sic] or as soon as possible thereafter. The position of Assistant Professor is limited to 3 years.

The Department of Communication and Arts (IKH) is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment characterized by academic and methodological diversity in research and education, contributing with new knowledge for the strategic and practical handling of processes of development and change in society and its companies, cultural institutions, media houses, public organizations and NGOs.

We are looking for candidates who will conduct original and cross-disciplinary research and teaching in Journalism.

At IKH, these topics are linked to the research group “Communication, Journalism and Social Change” (CJSC) and to the “Center for News Research”, both of which covers a broad range of different angles to the overall themes of journalism and media.

Responsibilities and tasks:
The duties will primarily include research (including publication/academic dissemination duties) and research-based teaching (with associated examination duties). In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also includes a duty to share knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate. Furthermore, as an assistant professor you are expected to complete the educational training programme (UniPæd) for assistant professors at RUC whereas the position as associate professor includes managing research, provide guidance and supervision of PhD-students, assistant professors and researchers as well as take part in academic assessments.

The successful candidate is expected to:
• play an active role in developing journalism as a dynamic field of research, carry out individual research and participate in collaborative research projects with academic colleagues and partners from other organisations • contribute actively to the development research based journalism teaching and related areas of study in teaching and supervision at the educational programs in journalism at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level of education

Qualifications:
Applicants must :
• Hold a PhD degree or equivalent within journalism or other relevant areas of research. • Have documented scientific qualifications such in relation to one or more of the above mentioned subject areas. • Have a command of Danish (or Swedish/Norwegian) that is sufficient to teach and supervise effortlessly in Danish, and to participate in administrative and collegial activities. Applicants, who do not master Danish at the present moment, will be expected to acquire a sufficient level within 2-3 years.

Exclusively for associate professors:
• Documented research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved through satisfactory appointment as an assistant professor in relation to the above subject area(s).

Both assistant and associate professors are also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills and to be a visible, active participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department. Practical work experience in Journalism will be an advantage but not a requirement.

Assessment:
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to;
• research topic,
• scientific production and research potential at an international level,
• the ability to promote and utilize research results,
• experience in teaching and education development and management,
• an all-round academic experience basis, preferably including international academic experience, e.g. from reviewing or editing academic papers or from organising research conferences or seminars, • ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,

Terms of employment:
