[ecrea] Doctoral workshop on discourse as intervention for social change

Tue Apr 05 15:01:19 GMT 2016

Doctoral workshop - Tom Bartlett 2016

Discourse as intervention for social change (doctoral workshop)

1st and 2nd June 2016

Principal workshop instructor: Dr. Tom Bartlett, Senior Lecturer, University of Cardiff, UK

Assisting instructors

Inger Lassen, Professor, Department of Culture and Global Studies, AAU

Anders Horsbøl, PhD, Associate professor, Department of Communication, Aalborg University

This course will be staged over two days. Each morning of the two days will feature lectures by the workshop instructors with opportunities for questions and more extended discussion after each lecture. This will be followed by hands-on analysis of data examples relating to questions and issues raised in the lectures. The theme of the workshop focuses on Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA) which has emerged as a branch of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in response to critique sometimes raised against certain aspects of CDA. Rather than looking at hegemonic discourses as the only relevant data source, PDA is interested in exploring how so-called positive discourses in sites of resistance may play a role in bringing about social change for a better world.

Part of the mornings and each afternoon will be spent on student presentations and feedback by workshop instructors. When registering for the workshop, the participants will add an abstract describing their PhD projects. The abstracts serve the purpose of establishing common ground and coherence with the workshop theme and should not exceed 250 words, including title, context, purpose, and theoretical and methodological approaches. Presentations should not repeat the contents of the abstract, but should focus on a specific issue that currently challenges the presenter. The workshop will be based on interaction in groups as well as plenary discussions. The language of instruction is English.

Location: Aalborg University, CREATE building, Rendsburggade 14, harbour campus

Readings: A reading list of obligatory and recommended readings will be uploaded to workshop participants by 8 May.

Participation

The course is for doctoral students working with discourse studies in the broadest sense. Please register online (note that the form does not work with Internet Explorer). The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 20, and participants will be registered on a first-come, first-serve-basis. The morning lectures, however, are free and open for anyone to attend. Doctoral students from outside Aalborg and Denmark can also participate. Full participation in the workshop will gain 2 ECTS, including a presentation.

Registration is free for doctoral students registered with a Danish University, but there is a charge of DKK 500 to cover refreshments in the breaks and lunches for 2 days. For other students and scholars, there is a low registration fee of DKK 800 including refreshments and lunches for two days. The fee is non-refundable.
