A reminder of the approaching deadline (25 April) for applications for this fully-funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award to be hosted by the Department of Culture, Film and Media in collaboration with Ofcom. The project is highly interdiscplinary and so we would welcome applicants from relevant disciplines in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Applicants with experience of conducting audience or statistical research, and from diverse backgrounds, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Please forward to any students who may be interested.

Longitudinal Analysis of Media Users and Digital Media

The UK’s communications regulator Ofcom has generated a number of longitudinal quantitative and qualitative datasets that are unique in their coverage of shifting attitudes, uses and behaviours regarding digital media culture over the past 10 years. This CDA will enhance understanding of people's changing uses of and attitudes towards digital media through the synthesis and analysis of Ofcom's datasets, contextualised in relation to wider socio-cultural research. Ofcom’s extensive datasets (consisting of seven qualitative and quantitative datasets stretching back ten years) offer considerable scope for the award holder to shape their own research project. Possible areas for study could focus on, but are not restricted to: how UK audiences’ uses of and attitudes towards digital media have changed since 2005; which factors have shaped these changes in attitude and how might they be shaped by the wider socio-cultural context in which they emerge; how longitudinal analysis of change in the uses of and attitudes towards digital media might inform media policy as well as broader theorisations of the ways in which people negotiate technological, media or cultural change.
