Climate Change: Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics

University of Brighton, Thursday 28-Friday 29 April 2016

Launch Conference for the Centre for Research in Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics

Over the past 15 years, research into climate change communication and engagement, policy and practice, has proliferated, enabling a more nuanced understanding of the social, cultural and political dimensions of climate change. Yet, as 2015 is identified as the hottest year on record, the rapidity of climatic change and its social effects remain mismatched with the urgency and depth of social and political change required. In this context, what are the opportunities and challenges for climate research, practice and theorisation? What have we learnt so far, and where do we go from here?

To address these questions, this conference invites submissions from academics and practitioners across all disciplinary fields (social and physical sciences, arts and humanities, geography) and practices (arts and cultural sector, NGOs, community groups, policy). As climate change calls for increasingly interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches, we are particularly interested in submissions that address or explore these concerns in the context of climate communication, engagement and action.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

• Cultural practices of climate change – everyday spaces, values, interventions • Climate change and/or the Anthropocene? – definitions, debates and theories
•	The politics of representation – media, imagery, NGOs, communities
•	Spaces of climate activism – normativity, empowerment, resistance
•	Climate collaboration and engagement – opportunities and challenges

Dr Julie Doyle (University of Brighton, UK)
