Gendering Austerity: Cultures of resilience and resistance

Birkbeck, University of London, May 16^th

This conference will build on our previous symposium ‘*/Gendering
Austerity: Cultures of coping and the work of consumption’/*, and focus
on how austerity measures have transformed gender and culture, not only
in terms of the ‘impact’ of these policies, but in the way that these
policies have been resisted and challenged. How are the various
discourses of agency, choice, and aspiration that accompany neoliberal
policies of austerity negotiated and what does this mean for gendered
political and economic identities? How has resistance to austerity and
neoliberalism been gendered? What cultural strategies are being used to
resist the negative effects of austerity? What ‘new femininities’ are
emerging from social movements that focus on the gendered impact of the
cuts? How do they intersect with issues of class, race, age etc.?

We welcome papers and other interventions that engage with:

·Cultural, media and artistic resistance to austerity measures and
challenges to austerity discourses

·Gender and caring, health care and health services, housing and social
infrastructure.

·Gendered identities of resistance that have emerged to challenge austerity

·The gendered culture of economics and finance

·The cultural industries, precarity and austerity

·Alternative modes of production, economic diversity and alternatives to
austerity
