Call for Book Chapters

Media, Margins and Education

This proposed edited collection seeks chapters exploring how various
forms of media are employed to connect (or further disconnect) those at
the margins of society through educational policies and practices. The
book sets out to uncover the developments for media and education around
the world as they apply to people who have been excluded for economic,
political, cultural, linguistic, geographical or other reasons. The
relationship between people at the margins of society and media has been
theoretically disputed, advocated for, and exemplified by scholars in
cultural studies, media studies, and communication fields. Similarly, a
significant amount has been written about media and education models and
practices, and specific case studies have explored these practices for
marginalized people. While less has been written about media education
policy, most scholars and practitioners in the field advocate fervently
for it.

No one book exists that brings a cross-section of media and education
policies, models, and practices from around the world in such an
inclusive way about people excluded from society. This collection seeks
a diverse array of perspectives that integrate theoretical, social
science and cultural studies methodologies to make visible the
challenges, complexities, and breakthroughs media education provides for
people that are often dismissed, ignored or kept out because of lack of
education and media access.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to, people at the margins
of society AND:

-Media education policy

-Grassroots initiatives

-Participation gap(s) and digital divide(s)

-Educational media and technologies

-Blended learning

-Open networks and informal learning

-Media literacy approaches and practices

-Connected learning

-Digital media and pedagogy

-Participatory cultures

-Digital citizenship
