Call for Proposal and Papers

With globalisation and the emergence of knowledge economies, greater 
access to universities as pivot institutions in the development matrix 
of all countries has become an urgent demand. Competition with more 
developed partners on the global stage has made it necessary for 
developing countries to evolve and maintain a robust tertiary education 
sector with high performing universities as leaders of thought, 
research, and technological innovation. For their part, universities, to 
remain relevant, must constantly build their capacity, redefine 
themselves to meet local and global needs, and be significant 
contributors to public culture and be active participants in politics 
through engagements with government, the private sector, civic groups 
and the media.

However, universities in developing societies face particular challenges 
as they seek to contribute to the development agenda in the 21st 
century. Questions such as who funds university education and who 
benefits from it are central. More broadly, issues regarding physical 
and intellectual resources, the shape and tenor of research and 
scholarship, governance, institutional culture and tradition, as well as 
the extent and nature of intervention from government and private 
interests take on particular significance.

Conference Goals
The Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies at the University of 
Technology, Jamaica seeks to provide a forum for scholars in a variety 
of fields as well as policymakers and others interested in economic and 
social development to
examine the role that the university should and can play in developing 
societies
distil from among the challenges that these institutions face 
opportunities for redefinition
assess the scope for greater reach and wider global impact by these 
institutions

Panel and paper proposals might include, but are not limited to, the 
following:

Global perspectives on higher education in the 21st century
The university as  business in the developing economy
Poverty and access to tertiary education
Quality Assurance: Accreditation and Developing World Realities
Academic imperialism/Dependence and developing countries
Financing higher education in developing economies
Managing knowledge exchange among universities
Assessing institutional impact
Driving institutional reform
Models of university governance and leadership
Strategies for building a community of scholars
The university, the knowledge economy and nation building
STEM vs STEAM university
The Creative and Cultural Industries and the University Curriculum
ICTs and the university

Guidelines for Submission and Deadline
Individual papers
Abstracts should be between 200 and 300 words and should include a cover 
page with the title of the paper and the names of the author(s). The 
body of the abstract must contain, where appropriate, the following 
information: problematique, aim(s)/objectives, methods/approach, 
results, conclusion(s), relevance, and keywords.

Presenters will be given 20 minutes to speak and 10 minutes for questions.

Panel presentations
Panels will constitute three or four members presenting an individual 
paper on a common theme. In addition to the individual abstracts, a 
panel abstract of between 500 and 600 words is required from the panel 
organiser. S/he should also provide the theme of the proposed panel and 
a list of prospective panel members.

Each panel member will be given 20 minutes to speak and 10 minutes for 
questions.

Submission of abstract:		February 14, 2016
Decision on abstract:		March 12, 2016
Early registration:		begins March 12, 2016
Late registration:		March 28, 2016
Submission of paper:		April 17, 2016
