Project description
In 2014, JMK was designated by the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University as a leading research environment within the area of ”Global Media Studies and the Politics of Mediated Communication.” The area is interdisciplinary, and a variety of theoretical perspectives are combined with methodological innovation. A primary area of interest is contemporary flows of, for example, citizens and media (at the local and global levels). In addition to political and cultural analyses of the globalization of media and transnational media institutions, research on cosmopolitanism, war and conflict, identity and politics, global “media events,” media witnessing, cultural diversity and media consumption are represented within the area. Another area of research that for which JMK is known is that of the social role of the news media – particularly in relation to class, gender, ethnicity and age. These research projects include studies of/on power relations, the practice of news reporting, identity and social movements, political extremism, political communication, journalism and PR, gender and diversity in news, and the role of the media in both historical and contemporary conflict.
