Cogent Social Sciences is a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary, open
access journal, which considers original primary research and review
articles. The Media and Communication Studies section will provide an
international arena for the publishing of innovative and well-grounded
scholarship that focuses on the theoretical, methodological and
empirical dimensions of media and communication from an
interdisciplinary perspective, allowing for confluence with a large
diversity of subject areas such as sociology, political science,
psychology, philosophy, information sciences, the arts, cultural
studies, science and technology studies.
The social and technological contingencies that shape media use, the
market trends that impact on journalism and public knowledge, the
production and consumption of cultural commodities, the various divides
– racial, gendered, economic – that are reproduced by mediated
experience, the different forms of literacy and citizen participation
facilitated by the media, both old and new, the changing nature of
democracies and the shifting dynamics of identity afforded by
mediatisation, the implications for privacy in an age of big data, the
political economy of internet architecture, the regulation of the
creative industries through distinct models of intellectual property,
the interplay of media flows between the global and the local constitute
areas of potential contribution.
The journal is particularly interested in tracing the intersections
between transnational research in media and communication and the
contextual specificities that allow for critical examination of existing
paradigms.
All manuscripts will undergo a high quality and constructive peer-review
process. Authors retain the full copyright to their work as articles are
published using a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license. This
means that all work will be free to access online, allowing others to
share and build upon it. All articles feature article level metrics
offering a complete picture of how people are engaging with published
research, including data on downloads, citations, demographics and shares.
As part of the Taylor & Francis Group, Cogent OA authors will benefit
from this group's experience in academic publishing. High publishing
standards are ensured through memberships with the Committee on
Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Open Access Scholarly Publishers
Association (OASPA).
Best Wishes,
