Call for Articles
The climate change discourse is gaining traction in the global south 
since the historic signing of the 1992 United Nations Framework 
Convention on Climate Change. However, knowledge and awareness about how 
climate change impacts on or is impacted by global issues such as 
poverty, socio-economic development, population growth and resource 
utilisation and management is rather scanty. Debates on climate change 
are either pitched on elitist pedestals or muddled in fuzzy scientific 
rhetoric and essentialist ‘environmentalism’ thereby masking the 
multifaceted nature of the issue. Of critical importance is the 
observation that issues of   indigenous knowledge and awareness about 
the ‘politics’, meaning, consequences and risks of climate change to the 
local citizenry in the global south remain patchy - or not even 
considered at all in the current knowledge contestation space/s. 
Conversely, the science, discussions and meanings of climate change are
 circumscribed by broader societal discourses such as economics, 
politics, culture, gender, and language, to mention just a few. 
Inevitably, solutions to address the problem cannot be abdicated to one 
particular thinking or knowledge paradigm/perspective. This call seeks 
to invite IKS scholars based on their inter- and multi-disciplinary 
backgrounds to unpack the multiple dimensions of climate change and its 
consequences in the global south. Contributions to this special issue 
should demonstrate original research drawing from the diverse 
disciplines of the natural and social sciences using different 
theoretical and methodological perspectives to explore the range of 
cross-cutting issues attendant to the discourse on climate change. Key 
areas to be explored include, but are not limited to the following:
•	Historical, political and developmental perspectives
•	Emerging IK philosophical underpinnings
•	Appropriate set IK theories and methods
•	Languaging, language debates and discussions
•	Policy and polity matters
•	Education and learning discussions
•	Interfaced knowledge conversations especially with indigenous 
practitioners on Climate Change
•	Analyses of special IK case studies and narratives
Submission
Potential contributors should refer to the Indilinga: African Journal of 
Indigenous Knowledge Systems for authors ‘guidelines. Authors should 
submit a maximum 300 words focusing on one of the above or related 
themes to Prof MA Masoga (masoga /at/ univen.ac.za) or Mr. T Chari 
(tendai.chari /at/ univen.ac.za). The abstract should be submitted as a word 
document and must include, paper title, author(s) names and affiliations 
and a list of key words. The first draft of contributions is expected by 
the 30 November 2015.
