We are pleased to announce that the call for papers for the
International Conference “*Connected audiovisual processes: creative
practices and spectators’ experiences*” is now open. The conference
will be held on *April 5th-7th 2016* in Toulouse and Montpellier (France).

The deadline to submit an abstract (in French or in English) is *30
November 2015*.Please find below and attached the call for papers in

 Co-organised by GRECOM-MEDIAPOLIS (University Toulouse Jean-Jaurès)
and RIRRA21 (University Paul-Valéry Montpellier), in partnershipÂ
withthe National Audiovisual Institute (delegation INA Pyrénées),
National Center of Musical Creation of Albi.

Digital tools and media as well as the Internet have given a new impulse
to the audiovisual experiences, which has never been so multifaceted and
varied as today. From webdocumentaries to “total fictions”,
as well as “interactive” cinema, tactile documentaries, immersion
reports, augmented reality devices, mixed reality environments and
collective creation, we have observed in the last few years a renewal of
the audiovisual media forms, their production processes, and their modes
of reception. But how are we to grasp the representation and modes of
narration and to analyze the modes of reception, when the audiovisual
object has become open, modular, variable, playable, if not downright
manipulable when multiple accesses to the object itself are available,
and when the spectator presents himself as a “spectactor” (Weissberg
1999), as a “user”, as someone who practices (“pratiqueur”
according to Fourmentraux and Bianchini, 2007), and even
sometimes as a “co-creator”?

The purpose of this symposium is to examine the audiovisual media that
challenge, because of their configuration, the traditional ways of
broadcasting such as the screen and the television set. By being
shown on “new” screens (computers, tablets, smartphones) or through
the association of both old and new screens, connected audiovisual media
question both the audiovisual creation and its reception.

Within the framework of this conference, we shall try to determine the
aesthetic, economic and communicational aspects at stake in these
connected audiovisual media.

Â

Five main areas of enquiry may be considered:

Â

1. Architexts, interfaces, writings: how can we characterize the
creation practices and the uses of connected audiovisual devices? Do
they give new life to the audiovisual narration and aesthetics? What
sort of updating and hybridization of traditional genres –
documentary, fiction – do they implement? How are we to make sense out
of the overlapping of the formerly distinct domains – fiction,
information, games?

2.   From the museum to mobile platforms, from the movie theater to
virtual reality headsets, from websites to real-life, these media seem
to be circulating from one space to another. What models of production
and diffusion spaces do they favour? How are we to understand the space
of communication (Odin, 2011) that they lead to?

Â

3.   From spectator to interactor, what images of the spectator
emerge from these practices? What kind of spectatorial positions and
modes of commitment do these media and their devices induce for the
spectator? How are we to analyze the complexity of seeing, interacting,
participating and creating experiences of these audiovisual productions?

 Â

4.  What theoretical tools do we have today that allow us to analyze
in a new light the creation practices and the reception of these new
audiovisual media?

 What about the notions of interactivity, participation and
collaboration? Do they remain valid to understand the complexity of
these practices?

5. From the observation to the recording of commentaries on these
experiences, the traditional methodologies of SSH often turn out to be
limited for analyzing the mobile practices of the spectators that
include varied diffusion platforms. Should one envisage creating new
methodologies in order to grasp them better? Â

We welcome researchers and professionals (photo-reporters, producers,
film-makers, artists).

Â

We also wish to organize an exhibition that showcases the “new
media” projects (webdocumentaries, participative fiction,
interactive installations…) and exemplify these new modes of
audiovisual creation and reception.Â

Interested participants are invited to send an abstract in French or in

The paper proposal should be submitted as an e-mail attachment (.doc,
.rtf, .odt) with the author’s name as the title. The proposal should
include:

·    A 250-500 word abstract

·    A short biography of the author(s), including the position
title(s), the institutional affiliation(s), and the major recent
publications (one page maximum)

The authors will receive an email message confirming the receipt of the
abstract. During the conference, presentations may be delivered in
English or French.

Notification of acceptation or rejection: Â January 15, 2016
Conference Dates: April 5-7 2016
Full Paper Submission Deadline (maximum 5000 words): June 2016
The conference proceedings are scheduled to be publish by the end of 2016.
