[ecrea] Social Media Governance Symposium, University of Sydney, Friday Sept 4th

Wed Aug 12 07:28:30 GMT 2015

You are warmly invited to the SWARM 2015 Symposium on Everyday Social Media

GTFO - Empowered Users, Objective Violence and the Governance of
Participatory Media

9.30-4.30pm Friday 4th September 2015
University of Sydney, Australia

In conjunction with the SWARM 2015 conference
<http://swarmconference.com.au/> on online community management this one
day symposium brings together academics and online media professionals
working on innovative, systematic strategies to better govern social media
participation, to tackle the abuse of speech rights online and support
more inclusive user communities. Hosted by the Department of Media and
Communications and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences' Everyday
Social Media Research Group, the symposium has a critical cultural concern
with the structural and socio-cultural factors that underpin anti-social
behaviours online. In this it will consider both the visible
manifestations of hate speech and dimensions of Žižek calls objective
violence - symbolic aggression and the systemic, hidden relations of
dominance and exploitation that underpin it.

Guest speakers include Mia Garlick, head of Communication and Policy at
Facebook Australia & New Zealand, Rod McGuiness, ABC Radio's Social
Media Editor, Daad Soufi, head of Regulatory and Legal at IAB Australia,
and Marc Bryant and Jenyfer Locke from the Mindframe initiative. The
symposium will
include papers on feminist digilantism, youth responses to cybersafety
campaigns, legal responses to revenge porn, the psychological impact of
moderation work, and the regulation of online identities -- as well as an
industry panel on social innovation in community governance.
