[ecrea] PhD scholarship in Human Form and Motion: Visualisation, Technology and the Future Image

Wed Jul 22 03:21:58 GMT 2015

We invite applications for this full-time, fully-funded PhD scholarship,
offered jointly by the School of Arts and Creative Industries and the
School of Applied Sciences at London South Bank University. The
scholarship covers fees and offers a stipend of £15,000 p.a. for three
years.

Digital technology and computing provide extended means of visualising
the human form and motion. Static and dynamic images have been used in
science, medicine, engineering, art and media to record, express and
interpret in many professional and research contexts. Digital
technologies have also afforded new understandings of the ways in which
analogue photography shaped what could be made visible. New forms of
expression may also be possible in the future image through the use of
computational technology, including the visualisation of human motion in
different time dimensions (speed and acceleration). Such developments
could provide new insights into the study of human locomotor machines.
However, there is a paradox in that the computational technology behind
the digital image remains opaque with respect to its cultural meaning.
This problem gives rise to the exciting possibility of undertaking
practical research in order to investigate the nature of what has been,
is and could be visualised in the future. The very nature of the topic
demands a transdisciplinary and collaborative approach involving art
practice, curation, cultural studies and science.

We are seeking candidates who ideally have an understanding in more than
one discipline related to imaging technologies and practices.
Prospective students could, for example, have an art and media
background and be working in new and networked media, a computer science
background and experience in human animation, or a biomechanics
background and an experience of computing and imaging technologies.

For an informal discussion or enquires about the scholarship, please
