[ecrea] CFP Practice as Research: Imprints and Futures

Thu Jun 18 18:31:13 GMT 2015

Tate Papers, Spring 2017
‘Practice as Research: Imprints and Futures’
Anna Hickey-Moody and Emily Pringle

Discourse on practice as research has developed with considerable
momentum over recent years and has informed scholarly approaches to the
arts and humanities in particular. This edition of Tate Papers will
examine existing definitions of practice as research and break new
ground by examining exchanges between practice as research, art history,
creative learning and museology. In mapping the recent history and
application of practice as research, this collection of essays will
address three key questions:

1) What imprints (histories, knowledges, methodologies) have been left
on fields of scholarship by practice as research?

2) In what ways can practice as research inform art theory, a field that
has relied traditionally on the work of historians and philosophers?

3) Can practice as research provide a means of interrogating and making
explicit museum practices such as curation, conservation and learning?
If so, how?

The collection of articles will demonstrate that making, and making with
others, makes more than art. Practice as research re-makes
subjectivities and, most importantly, re-makes disciplinary boundaries.
With this in mind, we invite contributions that interrogate processes of
making and experimentation by taking interdisciplinary approaches to the
questions above, which are themselves concerned with the relationships,
or lack of relationships, between different fields of scholarship.

Building on the premise that practice as research has social value
within and outside an arts context, this collection will focus on
matters of museological concern to explore how this emerging field of
scholarship might bring about change within the art institution.
