The Future of Practice Research

A one-day symposium organised by HEFCE and Goldsmiths, to be held at 
Goldsmiths, University of London on Thursday 4 June, 10.00 – 4.30

Practice is now firmly embedded in the research culture of a range of 
disciplines, and its impact seen and felt both within and beyond the 
creative and cultural industries.

Yet the relationship between practice and research continues to inspire 
lively debate. Diverse methodologies have developed across the various 
disciplines, but practice research itself increasingly defies 
disciplinary boundaries.

Debates about the impact of practice research, and how this impact is 
documented and measured, are of pressing urgency.

How can we best continue to assert the importance of practice research 
to the academy, to the professional world beyond, and to the general public?

Where does the most interesting and innovative practice research reside? 
How might we develop common languages and approaches so we can build on 
each other’s research? How do we peer review practice? How should we 
evidence the quality of practice research most effectively?

‘The Future of Practice Research’ symposium at Goldsmiths, hosted in 
partnership with HEFCE, offers the opportunity for researchers, 
practitioners and research managers to explore new ways in which 
practice research is extending, and to influence broader agendas around 
assessment, funding and impact in a period of constant change.

Lauren Redhead (Canterbury Christ Church University)
