***REVISED** Call for Papers

*Extended submission deadline: 1 June 2015*

We are pleased to announce an exciting addition to the upcoming
conference hosted by the Centre for Research in Media and Cultural
Studies at University of Sunderland. The conference will now be
officially launched at the Tyneside Cinema on the evening of Thursday
12^th November with Professor Paul Wells delivering his keynote address
there prior to a special 20^th anniversary screening of /Toy Story/
(1995). The Tyneside Cinema, a Grade II-listed building based in the
heart of Newcastle upon Tyne (a short metro ride away), is both
regionally and nationally significant as an independent cinema, cultural
hub and heritage site that has been lovingly restored to celebrate the
grandeur of its original art deco design. It offers a unique venue where
delegates can meet up to enjoy the launch of the conference. For more
information on the Tyneside Cinema, visit: www.tynesidecinema.co.uk
<http://www.tynesidecinema.co.uk>
The programme of panels and papers on Friday 13^th November will take
place at the University of Sunderland’s David Puttnam Media Centre,
located in the award winning Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s,
Sunderland, UK.
*Confirmed keynote speakers:*
•Professor Paul Wells (Loughborough University)
•Dr Peter Kramer (University of East Anglia)
/Toy Story/(John Lasseter, 1995), Pixar's first feature-length
production, and Hollywood's first completely computer generated animated
film, is an international cultural phenomenon. The conference, timed to
coincide with the 20th anniversary of /Toy Story/'s release in November
1995, reconsiders this film's enormous influence on mainstream animation
and on contemporary popular culture as a whole.
We invite proposals for standard panel papers, pre-constituted panels or
5 minute micro-talks or video essays that explore any significant aspect
of the film itself, its subsequent impact, or wider issues arising from
/Toy Story/ (or the /Toy Story/ franchise) and its reception (NB papers
may not necessarily engage directly with the film but with matters
arising from it).
Possible topics might include:
•Representation of the child
•Treatment of family and/or friendship
•Appeal to different audiences
•Growing up with the /Toy Story/ films
•Reception
•Fandom
•Stardom
•Performance
•Music
•Aesthetics
•Dominant themes/ideology
•Industrial and commercial contexts
•Merchandising
•The role of toys in the film as children's playthings or symbolic children
•Influence on Hollywood cinema, animation, or US popular culture
•International cultural impact
It is hoped that selected papers from the conference will be published
in the form of an edited book collection or journal special issue.
Please send abstracts of 250–300 words, along with personal details
(institutional affiliation and a brief bio) by Friday 1 June 2015 to:
(toystory /at/ sunderland.ac.uk) <mailto:(toystory /at/ sunderland.ac.uk)>
Acceptance notices will be issued no later than Friday 12 June 2015.
Accommodation and travel details to follow.
The conference is being organised by:
Susan Smith (University of Sunderland)
Michael Shaftoe (University of Sunderland)
Sam Summers (University of Sunderland)
Noel Brown (Newcastle University)
