Coventry University's School of Art and Design is offering a PhD
opportunity through a bursary for a student to work within our broad
research areas of Media, Culture and Communication Studies and

THE PROJECT
Coventry University is ranked as the UK’s leading modern university in
the Complete University Guide, the Guardian University Guide, the Times
and Sunday Times Good University Guide, and the National Student Survey.

The University’s School of Art and Design conducts world-leading
research and was highly successful in the 2014 REF: acknowledged as
containing world-leading research in all departments (71% of research in
the School was judged internationally excellent and 31% world-leading);
receiving a top ten rating for impact; and significantly increasing its GPA.

Coventry School of Art and Design is now offering an exciting PhD
opportunity through a bursary for a student to work with our professors
and other researchers. In addition to more mainstream approaches,
research projects may be practice-based where appropriate. They will be
pursued within or across our broad research areas of Media, Culture and
Communication studies and Disruptive Media (http://disruptivemedia.org.uk/).

We are particularly interested in the following subjects:

Digital media and culture (e.g. digital humanities, big data, post-digital)

The posthumanities (e.g. posthumanism; performative materialism;
non-representational theory of Barad, Braidotti, Drucker, Haraway)

New modes of media authorship, ownership, publication and dissemination
(e.g. open access, Creative Commons, copyfarleft, internet piracy, p2p,
gift economies)

Emergent/hybrid media forms and cultures (e.g. technologies of sexiness;
cultures of affect; disruptive media technologies)

Distributed, connected, platform, web and cloud-based media and cultural
forms (e.g. sharing economy; open education)

Globalised media, culture and politics (with special reference to Africa)

The politics of media cultures, media economies, institutions and
interfaces.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake some teaching
duties within the School, related to their areas of expertise (training
for this will be available).

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS
Successful applicants will have:

    a minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject
area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with
a minimum 60% overall module average.
    in the event of a first degree classification of less than 2:1, a
Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an
equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at
merit level (60%). In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element
in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at merit level
(60%).
    the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the
PhD within a three-year period of study.
    a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum
score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component).
    Knowledge and/or experience in the subject
    a good knowledge of Media, Culture and Communications studies and
Disruptive Media.
