                            Freedom of the Press

                            Dear Friends,

                            Â

                            Â

I am happy to share with you the news that in  May 25-27, 2015, the Jerusalem Press Club will be hosting an international conference on The Freedom of the Press: Old Commitments, New Challenges. The Jerusalem Conference will bring from all around the world leading journalists with experience in covering war zones, editors and publishers, representatives of organizations working to safeguard freedom of the press and the protection of journalists (Reporters Without Borders, International Press Institute, World Movement on Democracy, Committee for the Protection of Journalists, Article 19, Freedom House etc.), government officials and scholars.  The Federation of European Press Clubs and the International Association of Press Clubs are official sponsors of the conference. Â

Since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, many resolutions have been adopted, trying to safeguard the freedom of the press and the safety of journalists covering combat zones and areas of conflict. Nevertheless, these measures are often contravened by repressive governments, who do not allow freedom of speech or freedom of the press, while other countries impose rigorous censorship laws. Furthermore, the safety of journalists working on dangerous assignments is not always guaranteed, even if international law provides adequate protection on paper, and In 2014 alone, 97 journalists have been killed while trying to carry out their duties. Â The recent terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris and the beheading of journalists by ISIL only highlighted the seriousness of the problem.Â

The two-day conference will examine case studies, review existing charters on the freedom of the press and the protection of journalists, discuss ways and means to improve the existing situation, and will conclude with resolutions which will be presented at other world forums. Needless to say, the Jerusalem Conference will generate a massive world media coverage.

Registration will start soon, on our website www.jerusalempressclub.com. However, if you wish to be updated individually, please let me know. Please feel free to spread the word among colleagues, and we will reserve some seats at the conference for journalism students.

                            Â

                            With best regards,

                            Â

                            Â

                            Uri Dromi

                            Director General

                            The Jerusalem Press Club

President, the Federation of European Press Clubs
