CFP: Singing from the same hymn sheet? The role of choirs, collective 
singing and affective belonging

5th International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Emotional 
Geographies, Edinburgh, 10-12 June 2015


Session organisers: Dr Emily Falconer, Weeks Centre for Social and 
Policy Research, London South Bank University and Dr Rebecca Bramall, 
London College of Communication, University of the Arts London


Following the popularity of the symposium Singing from the same hymn 
sheet? The role of choirs and collective belonging at the Weeks Centre 
for Social and Policy Research, we call for papers to expand this 
interdisciplinary focus on creative, affective belonging at the 5th 
International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Emotional Geographies. 
Developing the themes of the symposium, this session will explore the 
role of the choir and other spaces of collective singing, and what this 
can mean for an affective politics of belonging. Whilst congregational 
and institutional choirs have a long tradition of shared belonging and 
collective worship, the rise of the secular, community choir has opened 
up debate surrounding the role of singing for social cohesion, 
geographies of rhythm and feelings of well-being. This session will 
examine the embodied, affective experience of group singing and how 
these spaces can be used to create social and political connections, 
perform gendered roles and evoke a shared purpose beyond the 
congregation. This session calls for papers on the following:

    * Music, singing and cultural belonging
    * Collective singing, faith and spiritual worship
    * Gender, class and singing
    * The role of song in political activism
    * Choirs, community cohesion and emotional 'well being'
    * Transforming social behaviours through collective song
    * Capturing affective politics of belonging through creative 
methodologies

Abstract Submission Please send your proposal including title, a short 
abstract of 250 words and a short bio including affiliation and email
