[ecrea] Double Issue of Intellect's Journal Scene

Tue Jan 13 08:10:09 GMT 2015

Intellect is delighted to publish the double issue 2.1 and 2.2 of Scene.

This double issue of Scene explores, analyses and investigates the use of costume in theatrical and dramatic practices.

There are six articles focusing on an array of concepts such as: the use of dress in dance movements, how costumes contribute to performances, aesthetics of choreography through repetition and the use of dress in movement.

Interdisciplinary costume practice is the theme for four articles focusing on somatic costumes. Tamara Tomic-Vajagic explores the use of leotard costumes in ballet performance while Nadia Malik conducts a wear project, which is a visual archive into further understanding the significance of what we wear. Nicolle Lamerichs investigates the subculture that is inherent in costume play through fans that create and wear costumes of trend-setting public figures from popular culture.

Five articles focuses on costume and gender by exploring the role of the female body, including an analysis of Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece. Two visual essays focus on the positioning of drag queens, while another article explores the representation of masculinity through concepts of deconstruction.

The double issue concludes with five articles that explore the relationship between costume and technology, with articles on craft and making costumes backstage. Likewise the final article of the issue explores the theme of scenography and its connection to the body.
