Funded PhDs in Media, Film and Popular Culture – University of Brighton
Doctoral studentships in Media at University of Brighton

The School of Art, Design and Media at the University of Brighton is 
currently inviting applications for fully-funded doctoral studentships 
to join our PhD programme in Media, embracing single-disciplinary, 
interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research in Digital and Creative 
Media, Media Practices and Cultures, Film Studies and Popular Culture.

We particularly welcome proposals in the following areas:

(a) Digital Activism and Audiences – the nature of online communities, 
digital storytelling, design and creativity, activism, resistance and 
empowerment, transmedia, questions of ageing, disability, gender and 
sexuality.

 (b) Creative Media Practices and Screen Cultures - creative and 
digital media practices, cultures and economies, practice, policy and 
education, film and documentary, photography, videogames and popular 
media culture.

 (c) Media, Environment and Sustainability – environmental 
communication and media, climate communication and engagement, popular 
media culture and environment, smart technologies and sustainable 
mobilities, consumption and everyday life, celebrity activism.

(d) Gender, Sexuality and Mediated Identities - Representations in film, 
TV and popular media culture, LGBTQ activism and new media, feminist and 
queer theoretical methodologies, digital media production and 
consumption within marginalised communities or LGBTQ youth communities.

We particularly welcome applications that engage with communities, 
business, policy or the public and civil sectors.
Application should be made to the Doctoral Centre in the College of Arts 
and Humanities which offers AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) 
funded studentships through TECHNE, a cross-university Doctoral Training 
Partnership. The Doctoral Centre is also able to award some University 
of Brighton funded studentships.

Potential applicants are advised to identify a potential supervisor to 
work with in formulating their application, and to ensure that the ‘fit’ 
between the proposed project and the research context and environment at 
the University of Brighton is clearly articulated.

The Centre for Research in Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics 
(SECP) is currently inviting applications for fully-funded doctoral 
studentships to join our PhD programme at the University of Brighton. 
The SECP centre’s mission is to rethink knowledge and practice in ways 
that are sustainable and socially just by producing world leading and 
innovative research at the intersection of space, environment and culture.

We particularly welcome proposals in the following areas:

(a) Spaces, Power and Justice – exploring the role of space and place in 
affecting power relations. We welcome applications that include 
theoretical engagements and empirical research in the areas of 
inequalities, differences, political subjectivities, authority, 
neoliberal forms of subjectivity, power and governance, and access to 
social and environmental resources.

(b) Environmental futures, communication and sustainability - addressing 
the urgent challenges of environmental issues and climate change through 
communication, media, design and/or practice. We welcome applications 
from critical, creative and practical perspectives from across media and 
communication, arts and design, architecture, urban and mobility 
studies, and human and physical geography, that create innovative and 
collaborative approaches to addressing local and global environmental 
challenges.

(c) Embodiment, performance and process –interested in new forms of 
cultural and political thought, in ontologies of process and emergence, 
in post-humanist and materialist feminist perspectives. We welcome 
applications from traditional and more experimental methodologies to 
explore issues such as the politics of embodiment, affect and emotion, 
spatial politics, embodied mobility and environmental subjectivities.

We particularly welcome applications that engage with communities, 
business, policy or the public and civil sectors.
