*Spring School on Participation in Media Cultures: Studying
Participation within Immigration Societies*

Deadline for Applications: December 15th, 2015

Date: April 5-8, 2016
Location: Institute of Media Studies, University of Tuebingen
Organizers: Prof. Dr. Tanja Thomas & Dr. Miriam Stehling
Website: www.uni-tuebingen.de/springschoolparticipation

Call for Applications

The Spring School is dedicated to bringing together postgraduate
students and academic scholars from various fields and disciplines to
discuss their understandings and conceptualizations of participation in
media cultures. A focus is being put on theoretical as well as empirical
perspectives on studying (mediated) participation in the context of
so-called immigration societies. With this, we want to offer a week of
dialogue over recent debates on immigration and society in Europe in
regards to what participation means and what role media can play.
We would like to initiate a dialogue on the different aspects around
participation in media cultures. Keynote speeches deal with media,
participation, and alternative democracy (Peter Dahlgren); memory
politics of forced migration in mediated societies (Karina Horsti); and
politics and aesthetics of immigrant protest (Katarzyna Marciniak).
We now invite applications of (young) researchers from different
disciplines whose presence will become a vital part of the Spring School
program. The program offers different formats of presentation of ideas
and possibilities for dialogue. Participants will be expected to present
their own research project during a poster session (posters to be
prepared beforehand!) and take part in roundtable discussions on topics
linked to the keynote speeches and further topics including media,
participation, and civic culture or (feminist) activism or solidarity.
The participants will be part of the roundtable discussion that is best
suited to their research interests.

Keynote Speakers

The confirmed keynote speakers are:

Prof. Dr. Peter Dahlgren, Lund University
Dr. Karina Horsti, University of Jyväskylä
Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Marciniak, Ohio University
