[ecrea] Fully-funded PhD in the Department of Theatre, Film & Television

Sun Jun 29 09:50:20 GMT 2014

Applications are invited for the following fully-funded PhD opportunity, looking at the contemporary circulation and reception of historical drama/heritage films within Europe.

The studentship will provide EU tuition fees and a scholarship for three years (£13,863 for 2014/15), and is available at the University of York, from October 2014, with Prof Andrew Higson as lead supervisor, and Dr David Forrest (Sheffield University) as secondary supervisor.

The following questions are intended as a guide to the research area for the PhD studentship:
How are heritage films and historical dramas distributed and consumed across Europe?
Who is their audience and what are the mechanisms of their consumption?
To what extent do films circulate beyond their country of origin?
And how does this circulation reflect common understandings of the ‘European Project’?
It is up to applicants to define their research project within this broad context, perhaps especially in terms of the country or countries on which the applicant wishes to focus, and it will form part of the application process to suggest ideas that can be discussed and developed with the project supervisors. Ideally, the project will focus on 21st century developments.

The PhD is part of a network, funded through the White Rose College of the Arts& Humanities, entitled ‘European Film, European Heritage, European Identity’. The network links the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York and is part of the White Rose College of the Arts& Humanities (WRoCAH). The successful applicant will be able to participate fully in the activities of the network. They will also have access to all the additional opportunities provided by the White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities, including Research Training Mobility funds, Researcher Employability projects, and Knowledge Exchange Projects.

The successful applicant will also be affiliated to a larger research project led by Andrew Higson, 'Mediating Cultural Encounters Across European Screens' (www.mecetes.co.uk), which embraces University of York, University of Copenhagen and Free University of Brussels (VUB).
