Just a reminder re the cfp for our annual conference (Paul Hoggart may
be joining us as well) :
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GIANTS: REMEMBERING RICHARD HOGGART, STUART HALL AND
JOHN TULLOCH
INSTITUTE OF COMMUNICATION ETHICS
ANNUAL CONFERENCE
24 OCTOBER 2014, FRONTLINE CLUB, LONDON W2 1QJ
CALL FOR PAPERS
Three giants in the study of media have died recently. Richard Hoggart
and Stuart Hall helped invent the study of media as a serious academic
subject half a century ago. Without them, communication and cultural
studies would not be on the curriculum of so much of the academy.
Hoggart’s The Uses of Literacy in 1957 and Hall’s Policing the Crisis in
1978 are seminal public intellectual texts. The writings of John Tulloch
(a prominent member of the ICE executive group and regular contributor
to Ethical Space) covered a vast range of communication ethics issues
(the reporting of the ‘war on terror’, the representation of ‘evil’ in
the media, media regulation, the ethics of investigative reportage – and
even the demonization of Rebekah Brooks). We owe them much. We tread in
the footsteps of these intellectual giants.
This one day conference at the Frontline Club invites short papers (10
minutes) which explore and celebrate the contributions they made to the
study of communication ethics. The palette is by design wide and could
include contributions from a range of disciplines including ethics,
journalism. cultural studies, sociology, intellectual history, memory
studies and politics.
If you wish to contribute 200 word abstracts please send them by 1 July
2014 to Fiona Thompson , Director of ICE, at (f.thompson287 /at/ gmail.com).
