Journalism research has for long prioritized studying political
journalism and the media as a political public sphere. This political
leaning is closely linked to the idea of a professional, autonomous, and
versatile press, addressing issues of societal importance, as the
precondition for democracy. However, a research agenda on arts and
cultural journalism, cultural criticism in the media, and the cultural
public sphere is currently emerging, pointing to cultural journalism as
a growing subfield, which is of considerable public significance, and
which may reinforce media institutional brands.
In this special issue of Journalism Practice on cultural journalism and
cultural criticism across media platforms, we invite researchers to
contribute to and elaborate on this emerging research agenda by
investigating some of the following issues:
- Demarcating cultural journalism: How can we conceptualize cultural
journalism and cultural criticism in contemporary media culture?
- Cultural journalism in a globalized media society: How are
global/local cultural diversities negotiated in the form and content of
arts and cultural journalism – for example in national and/or
cross-national perspectives?
- The interplay of the cultural industries and cultural journalists:
Which patterns characterize the interplay of cultural
producers/distributors and cultural journalists – for example within
specific and/or across cultural fields in the increasingly
cross-mediated communication environment?
- Professionalization/de-professionalization of cultural journalists:
How does the increasing heterogeneity of cultural arbiters of taste in
contemporary media culture influence and transform the production of
cultural journalism and cultural criticism?
