Cyber Islam: Global Media and the Boundaries of Religious Identity

The growth of transnational Arab television, in addition to the 
accelerating use of the new and social media, has triggered a debate 
about the rise in transnational political and religious identification. 
Arab Muslims, across the world, have embraced the new media and ICTs not 
only as a source of information but also as a source of guidance and 
fatwa, thereby transforming Muslim practices and rituals.  While a 
number of Muslim clerics welcome the opportunity to use the new media to 
reach out to a global audience, others consider such global media as a 
threat to the native cultural identity and a celebration of capitalistic 
values.

Undoubtedly, the process of globalization, especially in the field of 
media and ICTs, challenges the cultural and religious systems, 
especially in terms of identity formation.  The aim of this book is to 
examine the implications of the new media and ICTs on the Islamic 
religious identity in the Arab Middle East and North Africa (AMENA) and 
among Muslim Arab Diasporas around the world. Another aim is to shed new 
light on the influence of media exposure on national, political, and 
cultural boundaries of the Islamic identity.

We welcome contributions which explore the intricate triad of media, 
religion and culture focusing on the following themes (but not limited 
to): contemporary Islamic media and new patterns of religious learning, 
Islamic discourse on the internet, weakening of traditional Islamic 
institutions, the Islamic Ummah online, new modes of preaching and 
fatwa, new areas of fieldwork, Islam and citizenship, new communication 
policies in the Arab world, Islamic feminism, impact of new media on 
Islamic socio-cultural values, The global development of the Muslim 
diaspora, religious radicalisation.

This volume is to be published by Springer  as part of the prestigious 
Series Muslims in Global Societies, designed to define an intellectual 
terrain and to provide insights into the contemporary dynamics of Muslim 
life by focusing on questions concerning the dynamics between Muslim 
communities, both in Islamic countries and the West, and contemporary

Submissions will be assessed for their scholarly merit and the extent to 
which they contribute to our greater understanding of the mediated 
cultures in the AMENA. Contributors should limit their articles to 
between 7000 and 8000 words (including references).

Abstracts (250 words) are due by 18 May 2014.
Upon acceptance, full articles will be due by 30 September 2014.
