Journalism studies has been a research area at Nordic universities for 
many decades. Today, at most Nordic universities, journalism research is 
integrated into and organized within the broader field of media and 
communication studies. The Nordic Research Network in Journalism 
Studies, financed by NordForsk from 2009–2013, was an attempt to 
establish a more specialized forum for contact and cooperation between 
senior researchers and PhD students engaged in journalism studies.



An important aim of the network was to inspire and activate debates 
about the technological, economical and cultural changes taking place in 
the media industry and the challenges being faced by journalism as a 
societal institution. Much of the activity in the network involved 
seminars and workshops for doctoral students – and discussions related 
to paper presentations by young scholars. The present volume of Nordicom 
Review represents a selection of papers written by current and former 
PhD students, in most cases related to their doctoral projects.
