[ecrea] U of Munich: Doctoral Researcher, Conflict Journalism

The Department for Communication Science and Media Research (IfKW) at
Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, invites outstanding, highly
motivated candidates to apply for the following position:
DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
IN THE AREA OF CONFLICT JOURNALISM (F/M)
67% position, TV-L 13, for 3 years, from January 2014
The position focuses on the analysis of news reporting in the context of
various kinds of violent and non-violent conflicts. Special emphasis
will given to the professional values and routines of conflict
journalists, their interactions with sources, audiences and other
actors, as well as the various contextual factors that shape the
production of conflict-related news.
Successful candidates will join a group of young researchers who are
part of a larger international project team, involving nine European
universities and research institutions. The EU-funded research endeavor
investigates the role of media in conflicts. Candidates are encouraged
to conduct their PhD based on their research within the project.
Suitable applicants should
- hold a university degree (MA or equivalent) in Communications, or
another social sciences field if they can demonstrate experience in the
analysis of conflict journalism;
- have experience in social scientific empirical research, specifically
profound knowledge of qualitative interview methods; and
- have excellent command of English (written and oral), and at least
basic German communication skills.
The candidate is expected to
- contribute actively to the research in the outlined target area;
- contribute to the development of a the research design and relevant
research tools;
- collaborate with a multinational team of researchers; and
- participate in publication activities and presentations at
international conferences.
The department and project consortium provides the candidate with
- an international, excellent research environment within a large,
innovative, collaborative, EU-funded research project;
- collaboration with and supervision by experienced researchers in the
area of conflict journalism; and
- a generous budget for research-related travelling (conferences,
project meetings, etc.) and other research-related expenses.

- a cover letter briefly explaining the motivation for applying to the
position;
- a CV, addressing the required skills (above), including academic
degrees, publications/conference papers (if any), and any other
activities of relevance to the above task (employments, internships,
trainings, etc.);
- copies of the relevant academic certificates (scanned); and
- a digital copy of the candidate’s final thesis, or a paper/publication
relevant to the topic.
