"Silent Film Sound: History, Theory & Practice"*
International Conference, February 22 - 23, 2013
This conference is dedicated to gather international scholars in the
field of musicology, film studies and related disciplines to promote the
discourse on the history, the theory and the practice of silent film
music and sound, with special regard to national and regional
idiosyncrasies and commonalities in the wide spectrum of sonic methods
and performative manifestations inherent in silent film exhibition
practices.
The conference is carried out in collaboration with /Kiel Society for
Film Music Research/ (http://www.filmmusik.uni-kiel.de/index.php) and is
part of the ongoing FWF project /The Sounds of Silents/ -- Sound & Music
in Viennese Cinemas 1895 -- 1930, http://soundofsilents.wordpress.com/
The conference will take place at IBZ (Internationales
Begegnungszentrum) of Kiel University, Kiellinie 5, 24105, starting from
9 am on Friday, February 22nd and Saturday, February 23rd, with parallel
sessions being held throughout the two days. All lectures presented at
the conference are free and open to the public.
The conference program also features a screening of the silent film
"Broken Blossoms" (D.W. Griffith, USA 1919) with live musical
accompaniment by renowned American silent film pianist Martin M. Marks.
The screening will take place on Friday, 22nd at 6 pm at the local
cinema /Die Pumpe/ (http://www.diepumpe.de/).
