Call for Papers: „Atmospheres: tuned rooms and sensory perception“

Deadline for Articles: 4. March 2013

We are happy to accept articles for the peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary Yearbook of Immersive Media (Jahrbuch immersiver Medien). The 2013 issue is entitled 'Atmospheres: tuned rooms and sensory perception'.

The yearbook is published in German and English. Each issue is devoted to special topics dealing with aspects of immersive media. It is published by the Department of Media and the Centre for Culture and Science Communication at the University of Applied Sciences Kiel, Germany. Immersive media are understood broadly as media which posess immersive potential in that they can bridge the gap between media user and medium. This emphasizes the dissolution of borders between the object and the subject just like the term or concept atmosphere does. Grounding on the new phenomenology (Neue Phänomenologie), founded by Hermann Schmitz, and the new aesthetics (Neue Ästhetik), defined by Gernot Böhme, atmospheric phenomena can be understood as part of our everyday life. The term atmosphere is related to concepts like recentering or displacement, which are useful to describe what is meant by the term immersion. Atmospheres can be understood as tuned rooms (Elisabeth Ströker), quasi objective feelings (Hermann Schmitz) or spheres of sensed corporeal presence (Gernot Böhme). They are the mode in which objects, art, rooms, scenes or scenographies presented to the spectator.

The yearbook is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary publication aimed at an international academic readership. The Yearbook invites to send articles dealing with themes like architecture, literature, music, sound and audio design, film, virtual reality, games etc. applied to the concept of atmosphere.

Submitted articles must be original contributions that engage with recent studies dealing with immersive theory and practice. Contributions should be 5000 to 8000 words in length. Please send an abstract, brief biographical information and contact details and your article to Dr. Patrick Rupert-Kruse via: (immersive-medien /at/ fh-kiel.de). The deadline for articles is the 4. March 2013. A style sheet can be obtained through our website at www.immersive-medien.de.
