The College of Arts and Humanities, Swansea University is seeking an individual with a strong professional background in journalism and communication and a commitment to teaching undergraduates and post-graduate masters students. The teaching of this post will concentrate on journalism practice, online and print, news and features, and on the broader communications industries. This is a permanent post. Job descriptions:


This 0.5 permanent post will be based in the Department of Languages, Translation and Communication, working alongside teachers of video and radio production, professional writing, public relations, web design, translation and interpreting. The post-holder will contribute to modules taught across the College. This post is intended to strengthen the College’s provision of transferable skills and work-related experience for its students.

This is a ‘Teaching and Scholarship’ post which would normally require between 8 and 10 hours of UG and PGT teaching in each of our two ten-week semesters. The tutor would usually provide the equivalent of four modules and other supervision / teaching as necessary. We currently require teaching on the following modules: MS 309 Online Journalism, MSM12 Online Journalism, MSJMO3 Comparative Journalism and MSJM40 Risk Reporting for the Erasmus Mundus MA in Journalism. The teaching portfolio is expected to evolve to reflect the interests of students, requirements of the degree programmes, and the expertise of the tutor.

The tutor would also be expected to supervise a number of work-based MA projects and MA dissertations across the spring and summer months. The tutor should be in a position to advise on establishing work placements.

Outside the two main semesters the tutor could expect to contribute to the College’s programme of study skills; to engage with the development of short professional courses; to develop opportunities to work with our Department of Adult and Continuing Education; to contribute to recruitment activities and open days.

In addition to a contribution to teaching and PGTM supervision, the post will include some organisational and academic administrative responsibilities.



Main Duties

a) Teaching Duties - modules as described above.

b) Development duties
Outside the two main semesters the tutor could expect to contribute to the College’s programme of study skills; to engage with the development of short professional courses; to develop opportunities to work with our Department of Adult and Continuing Education; to contribute to recruitment activities and open days.

c)Administrative Duties
The successful applicant will be required to share in administrative duties as directed by the Head of Department or College. These might include being actively involved in examining, the recruitment of students, attending and contributing to appropriate committees and related activities, giving presentations, or organising workshops, summer courses or conferences.

d)Other Duties
Members of staff are encouraged to maintain and enhance links with the professional institutions. A commitment to continuing professional development is mandatory, as is a commitment to the promotion of equality and diversity in working practices and the maintenance of positive working relationships.

General Duties and Responsibilities

This appointment in the College of Arts and Humanities. has a number of generic objectives common to Tutor appointments. These relate to

1. Teach as a member of a teaching team in a developing capacity within an established programme of study in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures. Transfer knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques with the assistance of a mentor if required, challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking. 2. With support, develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches and select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria; Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback. Reflect on practice and the development of own teaching and learning skills 3. Identify the learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives and give constructive feedback to students as required, provide advice on study skills and assist with learning problems 4. As well as carrying out teaching as required on modules that have already been developed the Tutor will review the modules in the light of the learning needs of students and define learning objectives and will design or select appropriate assessment methods 5. Interact positively and professionally with other collaborators and partners within the school, elsewhere in the University and beyond both in industry/commerce and academia. 6. Contribute to School organisational matters in order to help it run smoothly and to help raise its external research profile. 7. Keep informed of developments in the field in both technical / specific terms and the wider subject area and the implication for commercial applications and the knowledge economy or academia. 8. When requested act as a representative or member of committees, using the opportunity to extend their own professional experience. 9. Demonstrate and evidence own professional development, particularly with regard to probation, appraisal, and performance reviews, and participation in training events. 10. Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration 11. Participate in and undertake other research or administrative activities appropriate to their experience and skill, and as directed by the Head of the College or such other person delegated to act with their authority. 12. To promote equality and diversity in working practices and maintain positive working relationships



Person Specification

Essential Criteria
1. A degree or equivalent in a relevant subject
2. Professional background in journalism and communication
3. Demonstrate the ability and experience of teaching and providing supervision of students successfully 4. Excellent organisation skills to plan own day to day activity within the framework of the agreed programme 5. To work as an effective member of the teaching staff and to contribute to teaching programmes in cooperation with colleagues 6. Possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and be developing further skills in, and knowledge of teaching methods and techniques
7. Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal skills
8. A commitment to high-quality and innovative teaching
9. The potential to supervise undergraduate projects or dissertations
10. The potential to supervise post-graduate masters students
11. The ability to advise on work placements and internships

Desirable Criteria
12. The ability to speak and write Welsh
13. Experience of supervising undergraduate or postgraduate student projects
14. Experience of developing short professional courses
15. Evidence of commitment to Continuing Professional Development



Terms and Conditions of employment

This is a permanent position.
Hours: 35 per week. (This is a full time post but applications from individuals seeking part time, job share or flexible working arrangements are welcome) Annual leave: 31 days per annum plus Bank Holidays (pro rata for part time staff)
